iPhone 5 NFC Chips

Back in May, 9to5Mac had revealed some hardware details of the next generation iPhone based on information they’ve managed to dig from PreEVT iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2 prototypes codenamed N41AP (5,1) and N42AP (5,2).

9to5Mac now report that the next generation iPhone could also include NFC chips and antenna after further investigation of the hardware dumps.

9to5Mac reports:

Further investigation into this hardware code dump leads us to believe that these iPhones also have Near Field Communication (NFC) controllers directly connected to the power management unit (PMU). [..]

[..] Apple could tie in with a payment processor like Citibank’s PayPass system for credit card transactions or it could become a payment processor of sorts with its hundreds of millions of credit cards already on file at iTunes.

NFC would also allow iPhone users a quick and easy way to share files from one iOS device to another.

iOS 6 comes with a new Passbook application to collect stuff like boarding passes, movie tickets, shopping cards etc. that you’d normally keep in your pocket or wallet. If Apple’s 6th generation iPhone has NFC chips then Passbook could turn into a digital wallet.

Back in January, a Fast Company interview with a MasterCard executive indicated that Apple is speaking to various companies, including MasterCard, about its long rumored NFC based iPhone.

Numerous rumors about the fifth generation iPhone coming with an NFC chip were proved wrong, when Apple launched the iPhone 4S without NFC support. It did, however, take a step forward in the offline payments space by introducing the Apple Store 2.0 app, which allowed customers to self-checkout via an “EasyPay” mechanism.

As we noted earlier:

If Apple can make its 400 million credit card holding customers comfortable with the idea of using their iTunes account for real world purchases, NFC would just be another technology that works behind the scenes.

It looks like Apple is going to step up its rivalry with Google by bringing its NFC-based payment solution to the next generation iPhone to take on Google Wallet.
