Amazon is reportedly working on a high-end Echo speaker that will rival the HomePod in terms of sound quality.

The Bloomberg report highlights that the current prototype being tested by Amazon is wider than the current generation Echo so as to make space for additional components including four tweeters.

While Amazon’s Echo set of speakers continue to dominate the market, it has lost market share to smaller players like Sonos and HomePod which offer superior sound quality. Even the Google Home Max claims to offer better sound quality than Amazon’s Echo speaker.

The company plans to release the new Echo by next year, according to people familiar with the product. Prototypes of the cylindrical speaker are wider than the current Echo to squeeze in additional components including at least four tweeters, said the people, who requested anonymity to discuss an internal matter.

Amazon has dominated the smart speaker market largely due to its inexpensive Echo Dot and Echo speakers. In terms of sound quality, they are nowhere near the HomePod but their extremely low price tag has made them more popular among customers.

Amazon is reportedly also working on a high-quality music streaming service which would be aimed at audiophiles. The launch of a premium Echo speaker with superior sound quality would perfectly complement this new streaming service from Amazon. However, the report claims that Amazon’s plans are not finalized and there is a possibility of the product being shelved altogether. If Amazon does go ahead with the product launch, it is expected to launch next year.

The HomePod has not done well which forced Apple to reduce its price from $349 to $299.
