Apple 2018 MacBook Pro lineup

Apple today unveiled its refreshed 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro lineup. While the new MacBooks feature the same design as their predecessor, they now feature faster internals, more RAM and storage, a quieter keyboard, and an improved screen.

Across the line, Apple is now making use of Intel’s 8th generation Coffee Lake chips. The 13-inch models can now be configured with a quad-core chip albeit only on the Touch Bar variants, while the 15-inch variant now comes with Core i7 and i9 series of processors in six-core configuration.

In the GPU department, Intel’s Iris 655 GPU with 128MB of eDRAM is found inside the 13-inch MacBook Pro, while AMD’s Radeon Pro GPUs with 4GB VRAM is found inside the 15-inch model.

To counter the additional power draw from the power-hungry components, Apple has also included larger batteries on its new MacBook lineup.

Both variants of the laptop can now be configured with up to 32GB of RAM, with the 13-inch variant configurable with up to 2TB of storage and the 15-inch variant with up to 4TB storage.

While the display size and resolution remain the same as before, they now feature TrueTone technology. Apple does not that it is now capable of reaching 500 nits of brightness and has support for DCI-P3 wide color gamut. The Touch Bar also has True Tone technology, though it has not seen any other improvements.

Taking a cue from the iMac Pro, Apple is bringing its custom T2 chip to the MacBook Pro lineup for improved security and handling many other aspects of the system. The addition of the chip also means that the new MacBook Pro lineup supports always-on ‘Hey Siri’ functionality.

As for the controversial keyboard, the third-generation Butterfly keyboards are quieter than before, though Apple does not talk about any other improvements to it.

Apple’s refreshed 2018 MacBook Pro lineup is already available for order in the United States through the company’s store. The pricing for the lineup remains the same as before.
