We have come across several reports and rumors that point towards the launch of new AirPods. The latest report by DigiTimes claims that AirPods are slated to be launched, however, the launch timing is still not clear due to coronavirus outbreak.

Digitimes paywalled mentions how suppliers of Apple’s new AirPods series are worried about the coronavirus affecting the supply chain. Apple has already said that it will miss Q1 2020 revenue target due to coronavirus, canceled 2020 WWDC physical event, and iPhone sales in China have crashed by as much as 60%.

Earlier rumors have hinted at an entry-level AirPods Pro likely to be called AirPods Pro Lite. The budget AirPod is expected to enter production by the second quarter of 2020. Other rumors claim that the device in question is actually AirPods 3 and might borrow some design elements from AirPods Pro. However, the entry-level AirPods is likely to miss out on active noise cancelation.

Apple has managed to achieve a shattering growth when it comes to wearable devices and for the first time, wearable devices have surpassed Macs in the revenue. Last year, Apple launched the $249 AirPods Pro and the new earbuds are sold alongside the usual AirPods. The AirPods Pro addressed some of the major shortcomings of AirPods by offering Noise Cancellation and a rubber ear tips with better ergonomics.

Our Take

Apple suppliers are expecting AirPods shipments to skyrocket and reach 90 million in 2020. This translates to a staggering 50 percent growth in sales. In all likelihood, AirPods sales are expected to grow further with Apple introducing new models including an update for AirPods 2. In related news, the company is also said to be working on high-end AirPods Pro aimed at music aficionados.
