EA Sports has just released Madden NFL 25, the 25th anniversary edition of the popular video game series.

Madden NFL 25 is available for free in the App Store, joining a growing number of free-to-play games with in-app purchases.

Here are some of the features and improvements included in Madden NFL 25:

Collect your favorite NFL players from packs or win them in the Auction House, then dominate the field against friends by building your ultimate powerhouse team.

Madden NFL lets you choose from 32 REAL NFL teams and a roster of more than 1,500 REAL NFL players! Battle it out in true-to-life NFL stadiums, too. Ultra-sharp graphics make gameplay even more realistic. Feel the impact of every game-changing tackle with hard-hitting collision effects!

Relive NFL storylines and play through several seasons in Solo Challenges. Take on friends in the fast-paced, offensive shootout mode, Head-2-Head (a mobile exclusive)! Or, jump into Exhibition mode for single-player offensive and defensive football.

Run, pass, and make the big hits on D with new and intuitive Tap & Swipe controls. Better tape your fingers!

While the game is free-to-play, there are in-app purchases available from $1.99 for the Pee Wee Bundle to $99.99 for the All Madden Bundle. TouchArcade who reviewed the game notes that the game’s social spin and team deck building mechanics come with a lot of elements that push players towards IAP:

Acting as a looming shadow above the entire game is the energy system, which acts as a completely unnecessary limitation to playing solo challenges and multiplayer games (which are, after all, the only ways you can earn coin).

Adding insult to injury is the game’s attempts to really nickel and dime its players. Certain plays actually cost coins to use while playing, leaving your actual playbook choices diminished if you’re trying to save money. The game’s dual currency system also leads to some ridiculous options, including a literal ‘Pay-to-win’ button on Solo Challenges (that requires the premium ‘Madden Bucks’ which can only be purchased via IAP).

You can download the game for free from the App Store using this direct iTunes link.
