How to Enable AirPlay in Apps That Restrict It on iPhone [Jailbreak Tweak]

AirPlay is a very useful feature in iOS that allows users to stream content from their iPhone or iPad to other AirPlay-enabled devices such as Apple TV. This means that if there are apps that are not on Apple TV but are available on iOS, then you can easily stream content from these apps on your iOS device to your Apple TV.

Unfortunately, some apps prevents users from using AirPlay to stream content to their TV. For example, apps like Crunchyroll, Channel5, and ITV intentionally block the AirPlay feature so that users cannot use it. Luckily, if you have jailbroken your iOS device, then you can bypass this restriction with the help of a jailbreak tweak that was recently released.

Known as PremiumPlay, this jailbreak tweak allows users to use AirPlay in apps that restrict it. It hooks into applications to force them to enable the AirPlay functionality even if they have disabled it. As of now, the tweak supports the following apps:

  • Xfinity Stream
  • Verizon FIOS
  • DirecTV
  • Crunchroll

While this is a fairly small list of supported apps, the developer has said that more apps will be supported in future updates that will be released for the tweak.

Once you install PremiumPlay, there’s nothing much to do. The tweak will automatically enable AirPlay for the supported apps so that you can easily stream content from those apps to other AirPlay-enabled devices such as Apple TV. I’d recommend that you force quite these apps and re-launch them so that AirPlay will be enabled properly after you install the tweak.

If you don’t know how to use AirPlay, it is quite easy. When you’re playing a media in an app, you should see the AirPlay button. Simply tap on it to start streaming the content.

If you don’t see the AirPlay button, then you can enable it via Control Center. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center, then swipe left to view the music page. Here you should see information about the currently playing media. At the bottom, tap on the button that says “Now Playing on iPhone”.  A menu should open with a list of devices that you can stream to. If you have set up AirPlay with your Apple TV, then tap on it in the list and the media should begin playing on your Apple TV.

If your favorite app is not supported by the tweak, then I’d recommend that you send an email to the developer and let him know about it. He might support it in future updates to the tweak.

PremiumPlay is available for $1.99 in Cydia’s BigBoss repo and supports iOS 10. If you plan on giving it a try, do let us know how it goes in the comments below.
