Houdini 'Semi-Jailbreak' iOS 11.4

As they say, when it rains it pours. It seems that way when it comes to iPhone jailbreak news given the sudden flood of activity in the jailbreak community.

Yesterday, we thought security researcher and hacker, Min Zheng aka SparkZheng, had successfully jailbroken iOS 11.3. But he clarified that it wasn’t a jailbreak because he “didn’t remount the rootfs to R/W and install Cydia”.  He also added that it was because “Apple had added a new mitigation on iOS 11.3 in APFS KEXT” which needs to be bypassed.

coolstar was quick to jump on the opportunity and hint that he will be releasing an update for Electra Jailbreak to jailbreak iOS 11.2.6 – iOS 11.2 and advised jailbreakers to stay on iOS 11.2 – iOS 11.2.6.

SparkZheng also revealed earlier today that he has successfully jailbroken iOS 11.3.1, the latest iOS version, and published a demo video of the jailbreak.

If that wasn’t exciting enough, hacker Abraham Masri had just published a teaser video of Houdini for iOS 11.4, the iPhone hack that brings semi-jailbreak experience to iOS devices. iOS 11.4 is currently in beta and includes new features and improvements such as Messages on iCloud, Airplay 2 with Multi-room support, Stereo support for HomePod etc.

Houdini is not a jailbreak tool like Electra Jailbreak but it brings semi-jailbreak experience by offering features such as:

  • Change Icon shapes
  • System-wide ads Blocker
  • Change Emoji fonts
  • Change boot logo
  • Add your face to Animoji (iPhone X only)
  • Themes
  • Hide/rename user-installed apps’ labels
  • Add Cydia sources and install themes
  • Clean all apps cache
  • Change device’s display resolution
  • Hide/rename 3D Touch icons’ shortcuts.
  • Edit Siri’s suggestions list
  • Theme passcode keypad (iOS 11 style or custom pictures)
  • Colorize and resize icon badges.
  • Theme Control center icons and sliders
  • Theme Lock Screen ‘Music Control’

The latest version of Houdini, beta 2, currently supports iOS 11 – iOS 11.1.2. The demo video of Houdini beta 3 on an iPad running iOS 11.4 beta showcases some of these features such as the ability to disable system updates, hide app icon labels and respring the device, theme the keys on the passcode screen, changing the badge count color, etc.

Houdini is a good option if you are interested in customising your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch without jailbreaking your device.

We expect Masri to release Houdini beta 3 after iOS 11.4 is released to the public which we expect later this month. We will let you know as soon as there is an update about Houdini beta 3 for iOS 11.4, so don’t forget to signup for our Daily Newsletter so you don’t miss the latest jailbreak news.
