Last week, AllThingsD had reported that Apple will hold a media event in the first week of March to unveil iPad 3.

iMore now reports that according to their source, Apple is planning to hold the media event on March 7th, 2012.

Jim Dalrymple of LoopInsight who has an impeccable track record when it comes to Apple related rumors confirms the date with his typical “Yes”.

iMore also claims that iPad 3 will feature a 2048×1536 Retina Display and will be powered by a quad-core processor. They’re however not certain if iPad 3 will support 4G LTE networks:

4G LTE networking has been another mystery surrounding the iPad 3, with a compatible Qualcomm chipset becoming available, but international LTE coverage is still slim, and in some cases a year or more away. It sounds like Apple has 4G LTE lined up for iPhone 5 this October, but we’re still not certain if the iPad 3 will get it earlier. Verizon is going to want iOS devices that go faster than 2-3mbps, of course, especially with AT&T offering HSPA 14.4, and potentially faster, models. Apple could release a 4G LTE variant model, targeted at Verizon, AT&T, Rogers, Bell, and other carriers that have rolled out enough support to see demand, or they could wait and debut it in the next iPhone instead.

The leaked iPad 3 parts indicate that it will look like iPad 2 but sport a bigger battery, which would probably be required for the more power hungry quad-core processor and baseband chip that supports 4G LTE network.

iPad 3 is also expected to come a much faster processor and improved front and real cameras.

With less than a month to go for the iPad 3 launch, U.S. retailer Meijer has slashed the price of iPad 2 to $429.
