Various rumors and reports have all but confirmed that the iPhone 8 will be coming with wireless charging. However, disappointingly enough, a report from Macotakara claims that Apple will be limiting wireless charging on the iPhone 8 to only 7.5W.

Android phones from Samsung already offer 15W fast wireless charging so it is disappointing to see Apple offer only 7.5W wireless charging on the iPhone 8. Even the Qi 1.2x standard supports the 15-watt fast charging standard.

Worse, Macotakara source suggests that the iPhone 8 will not be compatible with the already available Qi wireless chargers in the market. Instead, they will need an Apple-certified chip to ensure they are compatible with the iPhone.

Apple did something similar with the Apple Watch which also features Qi wireless charging standard. However, Apple has modified the format slightly to ensure that an Apple Watch can only be charged with the wireless charger it bundles with the device.

On the bright side, Apple is said to include fast wired charging on the iPhone 8. This should help reduce the charging times by a significant margin. However, that does not change the fact that wireless charging being capped to only 7.5W on the iPhone 8 will be a huge disappointment for many. It is likely that Apple is placing this limit so as to prevent the phone from heating which is a common issue with fast wireless charging.
