The sheer popularity of the iPhone means that you will see plenty of hardware mods pop up for the handsets for users who like to customise their handsets according to their liking. One such iPhone mod that has gained popularity in recent times, especially among Chinese consumers, is a glowing speaker mod.

The glowing speaker mod involves installing an RGB LED strip into the speaker housing of your iPhone. The LED strip powers itself from the speaker so it will only glow whenever the speaker on your iPhone is outputting any kind of music. This means that whenever you playback music on your iPhone, the RGB LEDs will glow as well. This iPhone mod is available for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, and their respective Plus variants.

Sounds interesting? Here’s how you can install an RGB LED on your iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 7. Just a heads up though: the process is not for the faint of heart as it requires one to pry open their iPhone. And it goes without saying that you will end up voiding the warranty of your iPhone as well during the process.

Step 1: Order the glowing speaker RGB LED for $5 from here. Also, make sure to get your hands on all the required tools for prying open your iPhone. We recommend buying the iFixit’s toolkit for this purpose.

Step 2: Pry open your iPhone and proceed to unscrew the speaker out from its shell. There is no need to unplug the speaker wire. Also, remove the plastic covering from the speaker grille and the microphone.

Step 3: Proceed to insert the RGB LEDs into the speaker hole and connect its other end to the speaker power source. Make sure to insert the RGB LEDs into the second speaker grille as well. Before you seal your iPhone, boot your phone and ensure that the LEDs and your device are working properly.

The process is definitely not for the faint of heart but the end result is undeniably pretty cool. What do you think?
