As per a Samsung Display source quoted by the Korea Herald, the 2019 iPhone will be available in a 6.46-inch “Plus” model, alongside the iPhone 8 successor, which will sport a 5.85-inch display. This theory makes sense given that Apple historically likes having only two flagship iPhones at launch. While this year will mostly likely be an exception with the iPhone 8, iPhone 7s and the 7s Plus, the company wouldn’t want a repeat of this in the future.
Previous reports suggested that Apple would launch a 5.28-inch iPhone alongside a 6.46-inch model, replacing the 7s and the 7s Plus. This new report, however, takes a different route and hints at the possibility of an even bigger entry level iPhone model. It is said that the decision was taken based on the popularity of bigger screens and the evolution of technology.
A 6-inch plus iPhone seemed improbable a few years ago as it could potentially affect the sales of the iPad mini. But with Apple seemingly phasing out the iPad mini lineup altogether, a bigger iPhone will fit well in place.
With Apple shaving off bezels with the new iPhone 8, future iPhone models could potentially accommodate 6-inch plus displays in a 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus frame. We’re still some distance away from learning what Apple intends to do with the 2018 iPhone models. Until then, we have the iPhone 8 to look forward to.
The handset is expected to feature an OLED display, a Face ID scanner, and an all new glass back panel to accommodate wireless charging. Samsung is said to be considering building the world’s largest OLED factory to meet Apple’s display demands in the future.
