iLounge has shared couple of interesting tidbits today based on information they’ve received from their “repeatedly reliable source”.
The first one was about Apple’s next generation iPhone getting a glass or ceramic back panel we reported earlier and the second one is about Apple’s plans to make some interesting changes to the Smart Cover case for iPad 3.
Apple apparently has been working on a Smart Cover-influenced case of its own for the upcoming iPad. Said to be similar to Incase’s Magazine Jacket (and a host of subsequent alternatives that have appeared for the iPad 2), this new case has a folding magnetized Smart Cover on the front, and a rear shell made from fiberglass covered with PU/bicast leather. It’s unclear whether this case will be solely for the thicker new iPad or include backwards compatibility for the iPad 2.
We thought that iPad 2 Smart Cover case with its magnetic attraction was a pretty cool idea, but we haven’t been that impressed when we actually started using it as it snaps off quite easily. The other reason it hasn’t been too popular with iPad users is because it does not protect iPad 2’s back panel.
Incase’s Magazine Jacket for the original iPad
If this rumor turns out to be accurate then it will address both these issues. While the iPad 2 Smart Cover should work with iPad 3 based on the leaked parts, it also remains to be seen if the new Smart Cover for iPad 3, which is supposed to be slightly thicker and get a more tapered back casing, will work with iPad 2.
We won’t have to wait too long to find out as Apple should ideally release the new Smart Cover case alongside iPad 3 at the media event on Wednesday, March 7th.
