The popular New York-based news publication, Time, has made a list of best gadgets of the decade (2010 to 2019), and three products from the Cupertino-based tech giant, Apple, have made it to the chart – the Apple iPad (2010), Apple Watch (2015), and the Apple AirPods (2016).

Apple iPad (2010)

The iPad (2010) has not only made it to the Time’s 10 Best Gadgets of the 2010s, but it has scored the first position in the chart, beating even the Tesla Model S (which scored the second position).

The first-generation iPad made its debut on April 3, 2010. It was leap years ahead in terms of design, processing power, and software features compared to other tablets at that time. It was a perfect device for people to browse the web, watch videos, or play games. Since the tablet also came with 3G connectivity, it was as portable as a smartphone.

The star of the show was its 9.7-inch IPS LCD with 1024 x 768 pixels resolution, making it the best display you could get in a tablet, at least for the mainstream market. It had the Apple A4 chipset. While the SoC packed a single-core CPU, it outperformed every other tablet (netbooks at that time) in terms of performance and UI smoothness.

It had a 10-hour battery life, which is something that many brands couldn’t achieve for their tablets for years to come. Moreover, the iPad had a 64GB storage option. To put that into perspective, the majority of the tablets nowadays ship with 32GB or 64GB storage unit. In my opinion, it was nothing less than a marvel for the iPad to feature 64GB storage ten years ago.

The first-generation iPad basically changed the way people looked at tablets. I’d say it took the tablet market mainstream. No wonder, Time has chosen to put it at the top of their list.

Apple Watch (2015)

Back in 2015, the smartwatch market was quite niche. It was something that only extreme tech enthusiast would buy since the smartwatches had a poor performance, unreliable battery life, and only a handful of useful features.

However, all that changed with the first-generation Apple Watch when it launched on April 24, 2015. It had tons of processing power, a great OLED display, and more importantly, it had actual usable features thanks to Apple’s ecosystem.

Even now, four years down the line, the first-generation Apple Watch looks as modern as the latest wearables in the market. While the newer smartwatches from Apple, like the Series 5, have much better performance, the original Apple Watch is the one that deserves the praise for its innovation.

Apple AirPods (2016)

Just like the Apple iPad and the Apple Watch, Apple’s AirPods established a whole new segment of devices.

While there were other truly wireless earbuds in the market before the AirPods went on sale, the ones from Apple managed to get a lot of things right, including ease of use, battery life, call quality, and more importantly a reliable connection with the phone.

Even three years down the line, no other earphones have managed to beat the sales figure of the original AirPods. Apple managed to sell millions of them in spite of their relatively higher prices. This goes on to show how popular and influential AirPods have been.
