Apple is preparing to unveil its next generation iPhone on September 10th, but according to the Wall Street Journal, the company is already working on something bigger and better for next year. And when we say bigger, we’re not kidding.

People familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal that Apple is evaluating iPhone handsets with screens that range from 4.8-inches to as large as six inches. This is a big jump from the 4-inch screen of the current iPhone 5 and almost doubles the older iPhone 4/4S. Such an increase would put the iPhone on par with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or the Galaxy Mega.

Apple, like most manufacturers, tests a variety of products that never come to market. We’ve seen several iPad and iPhone prototypes hit eBay, and Steve Jobs himself confirmed the company tinkered around with the iPad size before settling on 9.7-inches for the launch model. Just because the Cupertino company is looking at a 6-inch display, it doesn’t mean it will pass Apple’s stringent testing. That being said, inside sources tell the Wall Street Journal that the company is more willing now than ever to consider something as radical as a six-inch device.
