There were rumors that iOS 10.3 would bring the Dark Mode feature to iPhones and iPads, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. Dark Mode seems to have been inspired by the popular tweak Eclipse which works on jailbroken devices.
Unfortunately, Eclipse doesn’t support iOS 10 yet, but there’s another new tweak that ports a small portion of Eclipse to iOS 10. Called DarkMessages, this jailbreak tweak brings dark mode to the iOS 10 Messages app.
The tweak turns the entire interface of the Messages app into dark shades of grey, which reduces the strain on the eyes when using the Messages app at night. Personally, I’m starting to like this theme more than the default light theme with a whitish interface.
The tweaks applies the dark theme to almost every element of the Messages app including the navigation bar, text field, message bubbles, and surprisingly the keyboard as well.
Once you install DarkMessages, it will be enabled by default. If at some point you feel like switching back to the light theme, you can disable the tweak from its preferences pane in Settings.
DarkMessages works perfectly as advertised and is worth the try. I find the dark theme more stylish and soothing to the eyes and you may like it too. Best of all, the tweak is available for free via Cydia’s BigBoss repo. Give it a try and let us know how it goes in the comments below.
