The new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus might look similar to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus but they’re clad in an all new glass back. This glass back might just give you enough grip that you can go without a case again. Or maybe you just want to show off the new iPhone 8 and the reflective glass.

You might be wondering, which color should you get? With this new model, we’re down to just three options – Space Gray, Silver, and Gold. That’s right, Jet Black and Rose Gold are gone.

After 5 years, iPhone has a glass back, again. And this time, Apple is way better at manufacturing. Apple says this is the strongest glass ever put in a smartphone. So hopefully it won’t shatter quite as easily as the iPhone 4 did. What does that mean for scratching? We don’t know yet. Speaking of the color, Apple says they’ve used a new 7 layer method to infuse the color on the new glass back. This should make sure that the Silver and Gold colors won’t be discolored years down the line.

1. Space Gray

This one is a classic. If you want to go stealth, you go Space Gray. If you’re going to put your phone in a case, or you don’t want people to know you have the brand new iPhone 8, this is the best color option for you.

And it’s the only option if you want a black front plate. If you’re going to be watching a lot of movies or YouTube videos on your iPhone, Space Gray is the best option for you as it will make the videos more immersive. iPhone 8’s Space Gray is somewhere between iPhone 6’s Space Gray and iPhone 7’s Black. While it’s not as dark as the matte black option we saw last year, it’s also not as light as the Space Gray version of the past.

As all new iPhones come with a glass back, they’re all going to get scratched up. It’s just a matter of time. But because the Space Grey version has a darker shade of black at the back, it might not hide the scratches as well as the Silver or Gold versions.

And if you look at it under direct lighting, fingerprints and smudges will be visible as well. The only thing you don’t need to worry about with the Space Gray color is it getting dirty.

2. Silver

The Silver option is the mainstream one. It comes with a white front face and it goes with anything and everything. If you’re going to be changing multiple cases, the Silver is the best option because the white faceplate and the silver ring around the Home button will go with almost any case, no matter how funky or over the top it is.

The Silver option here is similar to the white option we almost never saw in the iPhone 4s. It’s more off-white than pure white. The iPhone 4s in White suffered from a bad discoloration issue. But now that it’s been 5 years, we hope Apple has solved the issue in the latest iPhones.

As I stated above, Silver will do the best job at hiding scratches and fingerprints. Because of the white front, the Silver iPhone won’t be suitable for watch movies but it will be great if you’re going to spend time reading on your iPhone. Because most websites have a white background, having a white frame will be less distracting and the pages will feel broader and more expansive.

3. Gold

The new Gold option is the amalgamation of the previous Gold and Rose Gold versions. And it is gorgeous.

Thanks to the glass back though, the gold color is sometimes distorted. And from some angles, it looks more like a copper finish than gold. It’s certainly closer to last year’s Rose Gold version than the classic Gold (it’s more of a champagne/pink color than the classic yellow gold).

If you’re looking to stand out from the crowd or if you want a luxurious look in your smartphone, Gold is the best option.

When it comes to durability and scratches, the Gold option is going to be somewhere in the middle between Space Gray and Gold. It won’t hide scratches quite as well as the Silver version but they also won’t be as obvious as on the Space Grey iPhone 8.

Color is so subjective that there is no perfect choice that we can recommend as the best. Look at the range of colors and pick the one that best suits your style. Make your choice and don’t look back. If you get tired of the shade you selected, you always can, add a case to change its appearance down the road.
