One of the features that many iOS users have been requesting for years is the ability to view GIFs as an animation in the Photos app. When you save a GIF to your iPhone, it appears as a still image in the Photos app because a single frame of that animated GIF is displayed only.
The popularity of GIF is on the rise and Apple has taken this opportunity to finally bring support for animated GIFs to iOS 11. GIFs will now animate in the Photos app rather than appearing as a still image. While this a great news for users who are planning to upgrade to iOS 11, those who are jailbroken might avoid this update to prevent losing their jailbreak. If you’re one such user, then you should definitely check out a new jailbreak tweak known as GIFRoll.
As the name implies, GIFRoll brings support for animated GIFs to the Photos app in iOS 10. After you install the tweak, save any GIF to the Photos app and proceed with opening it. You’ll notice that the GIF starts to animate rather than appearing as a still image.
If you don’t know how to save GIFs, it is quite easy. Go to a website from where you can download GIFs, such as giphy.com. Open a GIF that you wish to save, then tap and hold on it. From the menu that opens, select ‘Save Image’. Now go to the Photos app and you should see the GIF saved in the Camera Roll album.
GIFRoll doesn’t require any additional configuration, so once you install it from Cydia, you’re good to go.
Given the rising popularity of GIFs, it’s no surprise that many users wish to have this feature. With this tweak, you can easily view GIFs as an animation in the Photos app and this is very useful when you want to share your saved GIFs with your friends.
If you wish to give this tweak a try, GIFRoll is available as a free package in Cydia’s ModMyi repo. The good thing is that it supports both iOS 9 as well as iOS 10, so a majority of jailbreak users should be able to install and use this tweak without any issues.
