The leaked iOS 11 GM build has provided plenty of details about the iPhone 8 and its various features. Now, another post from 9to5Mac details how Face ID on the handset will be setup.

The Face ID setup process remains the same as Touch ID with only a few differences. Like with Touch ID, you will first have to enter a secondary PIN for backup purposes. Then, the setup process requires users to move their heads “in a circle, while looking at the screen.” A message is displayed to users here that Face ID works better when it captures their faces from all angles. As the setup process captures details about one’s face, it will depict the progress by showing a circle around it.

As the above video shows, Face ID can also be used for authentication purposes in iTunes, App Store, and Safari Autofill. And the screenshots pretty much also confirm that the iPhone X is not going to come with Touch ID and will solely rely on Face ID.

While the Touch ID setup cannot be exited in the middle on existing iPhones, users will have the option of leaving the Face ID setup midway if they wish to.

As per the messages shown during the setup process, the ideal distance to hold the iPhone 8 from one’s face for the facial recognition to work properly is around 10-20 inches. The setup process is also smart enough to detect when there is another face in the frame or if it is being obstructed by something.

Another video posted by developer Guilherme Rambo shows the “authenticating with Face ID” process which will be a part of the setup process itself. While a camera preview is shown during this process, the developer believes that this will not be a part of the final release of iOS 11. This is also not the usual unlock process that one will have to go through because its too lengthy for daily use.

The Face ID settings will be present under the ‘Face ID & Passcode’ option in the Settings menu. The strings in iOS 11 GM seem to suggest that Face ID can also be used if the setup process only managed to capture partial data of a user’s face.

Apple will also make use of Face ID to ensure that the display does not dim itself when a user is looking at the display. This feature has long been available in flagship Galaxy devices, though it has not always worked properly.
