iPhone addiction is real. You might not think you use your device a lot, but you might be surprised by how much you check it throughout the day. According to Apple, the average iPhone unlocks their handset 80 times every single day.

Apple executives revealed this stat during a press briefing on Friday, which was focused on security. The company was keen to point out that not only does the iPhone bring industry-leading security, but with Touch ID, that security also enhances the user experience.

The majority of iPhone users use Touch ID to unlock their device; 89 percent of people with a compatible handset have Touch ID set up and use it. Apple says some iPhone users will unlock their devices over 130 times a day, but this is in heavy use cases rather than on average.

This is seen as a great example of how consumers are taking cyber security much more seriously. Before we had fingerprint scanners, many didn’t bother using PIN codes and passwords because they were too cumbersome.

Now the vast majority of iPhones are protected, and without that fingerprint and backup code, you cannot gain access to them. Our data is encrypted by iOS, so these measures cannot be circumvented.

Of course, many will check their iPhone many more times without actually unlocking it. The ability to see notifications on the lock screen lets you wake your device to view new text messages, emails, missed calls and more without entering your fingerprint or passcode.

Although the average iPhone sees 80 unlocks, then, it’s likely most will wake their device a lot more than that throughout the course of the day.
