boxy 3 tweak review

Every once in a while, we come across an amazing jailbreak tweak that definitely deserves to receive a mention. One such tweak is Boxy 3 which was released a few days back. If you jailbreak your iPhone with the primary reason of customizing it, then you’re going to love this new tweak.

Boxy 3 is a customization tweak that gives you complete control over how the Home screen layout should look like. It provides a set of fine-grained controls that allow you to define the positioning of apps, adjust the space between adjacent apps, move apps closer to one edge of the screen, and much more.

Once you install Boxy 3, you’re ready to customize your Home screen layout. Simply swipe up on your Home screen and a popup appears with settings that allow you to define the layout of the app icons. The popup displays a set of controls that allow you to do the following:

  • Adjust the horizontal padding between app icons.
  • Configure the vertical padding between apps.
  • Define the spacing of apps from the sides of the screen.
  • Adjust the spacing of apps from the top of the screen.

What I love the most about this tweak is that the changes are displayed in real-time. As you configure the settings to customize your Home screen layout, the app icons move around with a very smooth animation based on the positions that you define. Here’s a short GIF to visualize it:

In addition to layout customization, Boxy 3 has the ability to save your layouts so that you can easily switch from one layout to another without having to start all over again. Once you’ve defined your custom layout, press the Add button in the top right corner of the popup window. Enter the name of the layout, then press Add to save your custom layout. You can access all your saved layouts by swiping to the left on the popup window.

At the top of the settings window, you’ll find three different controls – a minimize button that shrinks the popup window so that you can take a look at your custom Home screen layout, a grabber for moving around the popup window and placing it anywhere you want, and a close button for hiding the window.

Here’s a video walkthrough that demonstrates the tweak in action:

In addition to all of the awesomeness mentioned above, the tweak provides a couple more of customization options that can be accessed via its dedicated preferences pane in Settings. There, you’ll find the following options:

  • Enable or disable the tweak or the popup settings window
  • Hide the Home screen pagination dots
  • Hide the app icon labels
  • Change the shape of app icons to square
  • Hide the Home screen dock
  • Create a new layout with custom columns and rows count

With Boxy 3, you can literally customize your Home screen layout to look the way you want. The best part is the fluid animations that take place in real time as you change the layout settings.

Boxy is quite similar to another jailbreak tweak known as Springtomize. If you’re an old jailbreak user, then you should be pretty familiar with this popular jailbreak tweak. Springtomize is an all-in-one package that allows you to customize any part of your iOS device. It has similar features to Boxy, plus it offers tons of other customization options. The major advantage of Boxy 3 over Springtomize is the real-time changes and the fluid animations, but if you’re looking for a full-fledged customization tweak that allows you to customize any aspect of your iOS device, then you should go for Springtomize instead.

If you’d like to give Boxy 3 a try, it is available for $1.99 on Cydia’s ModMyi repo. It supports iOS 10 devices only, but if you’re on iOS 9, you can check out the older version of the tweak called Boxy 2.
