Sometimes, the environment around you might be too dark that even the lowest brightness level of your device will not suffice. There’s no way that you can go lower than the minimum brightness level set by Apple. However, a new jailbreak tweak known as Dim by jailbreak developer Thomas Finch aims to break this limit.
This can be quite useful during the night when its too dark and your the lowest brightness level on your iPhone still hurts your eyes. As the developer mentions, the tweak places an “artificial” dark overlay on Apple’s brightness filter allowing you to make the screen even more darker once you reach the lowest brightness level.
So it is also important to mention that this won’t save battery life as it does not lower the led backlight but artificially makes the screen darker with the overlay, the led lights will still be working at the same intensity.
After installing the tweak, go to its preference pane from the stock Settings app to adjust your screen’s brightness. From there you can enable or disable the tweak on demand, adjust your device’s brightness after enabling the tweak as well as set an Activator action that will display the tweak’s control panel.
The control panel appears as an HUD on the center of your screen when invoked and allows you to enable or disable the tweak as well as adjust the brightness when it has been enabled. The tweak is also compatible with f.lux as well as Flipswitch.
If you use your device during the night frequently and would like to go beyond the lowest brightness level, I’d definitely recommend that you give this tweak a try. Dim is available on Cydia’s BigBoss repository for free and supports both iOS 7 and iOS 8 devices.
