Facebook has found itself as a pretty constant presence within the news cycle recently, especially as it relates to the data and information of its millions of users. But that isn’t stopping the company from adding some new features to its services.

Today, Facebook officially announced new “admin privileges” that it is adding to Messenger. This new feature is tied directly to group chats, and it allows for one, or more, of the members within a conversation to approve or deny any new members that might want to join a specific group chat.

“Admin privileges allow you to approve new members before they join your group chat. This is especially helpful in large group chats with people you may not yet be connected to, like when you’re planning a friend’s surprise birthday party with different groups of friends. Admins also have the ability to remove members if needed, and promote or demote any other person in the group chat as an admin.”

The admin controls will also let an administrator within the group chat promote or demote individuals within the chat to admin status and remove individuals from the chat as they see fit. At the same time, Facebook is also bringing in new links that Messenger users can send out that will invite people to a group chat. If there is an admin as part of the group chat, though, they will be able to approve or deny that new member.

Our Take

This is a nice new feature, especially with the fact that Facebook says millions of groups are started within Messenger on a daily basis. It probably should have been in there right from the get-go, but better late than never. Meanwhile, this is probably not going to do anything to get Facebook out of the proverbial doghouse, with so much attention being put on the company’s use of its user’s data and information.
