Apple has identified an issue with the GasBuddy iOS app, which is causing some iPhone models to seize up and become unresponsive.
The app, which allows users to quickly find locations of nearby gas stations, is causing major issues with a variety of different iPhone models, including the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, the iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. Apple Store staff have been made aware of the issue, and, as a quick fix, are instructing specialists to remove the GasBuddy app from customer phones as a temporary workaround. This is a quick fix to get phones working again, with a fix required on GasBuddy’s end to get the app and phones working together as they should.
The good news is that the developers behind GasBuddy are indeed working on a fix. In the meantime, however, they are also making the app temporarily unavailable to customers as they work on the fix, as a means to “limit the number of potentially affected users”. Here is the tweet sent out this afternoon by GasBuddy:
We are aware that some people are encountering issues with our iOS app. We're rapidly preparing an update we believe solves the issue and are making our app temporarily unavailable for download to limit the number of potentially affected users.

Devices that have been struck with the issue show nothing more than a black screen and an endlessly spinning wheel. According to initial reports, the problems with the app first cropped up sometime after October 18. Interestingly, GasBuddy was officially updated on October 17, which brought support for iOS 12 to the app.
There is no word yet on what’s causing the issue, nor when GasBuddy will have the update delivered to users so they can use the app again.
Update: A new version of GasBuddy is back on the App Store which fixes this issue.
[via @GasBuddy]We have updated the app, and the latest release is now live in the App Store.
