When jailbreak developer Filippo Bigarella released an app called StifleStand that allows you to hide the Newsstand on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch in a folder with a single click, many of you wanted to know if there was a way to hide other stock apps.

Dom Esposito and RageMasta have created a solution using the Passbook app called PassHack, that allows you to hide stock iOS apps without the need to jailbreak your iOS device.

Follow these simple steps to hide any stock app:

  • Point mobile Safari browser on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to http://www.cydiahacks.com/passhack
  • Tap on the Add to Passbook button
  • It will generate the Passbook for PassHack. Tap on the Add button at the top right corner to add it to Passbook.
  • Now launch the Passbook app, you should see the PassHack pass.
  • Tap on it and then tap on the (i) info button at the bottom right corner to flip the pass.
  • Scroll down and you should see links to hide each stock iOS app.
  • Tap on the link for the app you wish to hide, this will launch the Safari app and prompt you with a message like “www.cydiahacks.com would like to install “Newsstand Hide”. Tap on the Install button.
  • It will give you an “Unable to Download Application” error message, that’s normal, ignore it and tap on the Done button.
  • If you are planning to hide the Newsstand app, then this will replace the Newsstand app with a grey icon with a loading bar.
  • Tap and hold on the icon until is starts jiggling.
  • Tap on the “x” button to delete the app.

That’s it, this is a non-jailbreak way to hide any stock iOS app. Please note that rebooting the iOS device will unhide the app.

If you find the Passbook method cumbersome (and want to hide the Passbook app), then you can visit http://www.cydiahacks.com on your iOS device and directly tap on the links to hide the stock iOS app.

While it is a cool trick, we found it quite a pain to repeat this every time we reboot our iOS device. Let us know what you think in the comments.
