In this guide we show you how to downgrade your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 4G from iOS 6.0.1 to iOS 5.x.x using Redsn0w.

Some important points before we proceed:

  • This guide is meant for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4G users. It is currently not possible to downgrade the newer iOS devices such as iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 4, iPad mini, iPad 3, iPad 2 and iPod touch 5. As always, we’ll let you know as soon as there is an update, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or follow us on FacebookTwitterGoogle+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.
  • This method will work only if you’ve saved your SHSH blobs for iOS 5.x.x either using TinyUmbrella or had jailbroken your iPhone when it was running iOS 5.x.x and launched Cydia at least once, which would have cached the SHSH blobs on its servers.
  • Since the method restores your iPhone with iOS 5.x.x, you need to go through the process of setting up your iPhone from the backup, which can take sometime.
  • Please note that when you restore from backup, you will only see only iOS 5.x.x or lower compatible backups, so you won’t see iOS 6.0.x backups.

Here are the step-by-step instructions to downgrade your iOS device using Redsn0w:

Step 1: Download RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 (RedSn0w 0.9.15 beta 3) from this link.

Step 2: Download iOS 5.x.x firmware file for your iPhone 4/iPhone 3GS from this link or for iPod touch 4g from this link.

Step 3: Double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application to the Redsn0w folder. Navigate back to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application. Please ensure that you have launched the latest version of Redsn0w.

Windows 7 users should run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7 users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select ‘Run as an Administrator’).

Step 4: Click on the Extras button.

Step 5: Then click on the Even more button.

Step 6: Click on Restore button.

Step 7: Click on IPSW button. Navigate to the ipsw firmware file downloaded in step 2 and select it and click on the Open button.

Step 8: iPhone users will be prompted if they want to prevent baseband update, click on the Yes button to continue.

Step 9: You will now be prompted to put your iOS device in Pwned DFU mode to restore to the iOS 5.x.x firmware file. Click on the Ok button.

Step 10: Turn off your iOS device and connect it your computer and click on the Next button.

Step 11: Follow the on-screen instructions to put your iOS device in Pwned DFU mode:

(a) Hold the Power button on iOS device down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until your device’s screen goes black.

Step 12: Redns0w will automatically detect the SHSH blob for the firmware file on Cydia. If Redsn0w cannot find the SHSH blobs automatically then click on the Remote button to try again or click on the Local button and point Redsn0w to the SHSH blobs stored locally on your computer.

That’s it, Redsn0w will create a system restore image and inform you once it has successfully restored your iOS device to iOS 5.x.x.

You’re all set to perform an untethered jailbreak on your iOS device again. If you need help then check our How to Jailbreak page for the link to our latest guide to jailbreak your iOS device on iOS 5.1.1.
