When you close an app on your iPhone, it will remain open in the background, but most of its activities will be paused till the next time you open it. If there are background tasks that need to be completed, the app will continue to execute them until needed, such as Location Services, VoIP calls, and so on.

To force quit an app on your iPhone, you’ll have to close it from the App Switcher, which instantly kills all the background tasks that the app is performing and removes it from memory. Ever since Apple introduced multitasking in iOS 4, one of the hotly debated topics has been whether closing apps running in the background is a good practice or whether it should be avoided. We believe that it is useful at times when the app freezes or is using a lot of battery life in the background especially in case of apps like Facebook, Pokémon Go.

iOS has been designed to handle multitasking efficiently, and if there are apps that you use frequently, it’s recommended that you keep them open in the background and avoid force quitting them. Doing so will kill all the processes of the app and the next time you want to open it, it has to launch from scratch and this uses more power.

If you just got your hands on a brand new iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, the process of force quitting apps is quite similar to previous models of iPhone. In this article, we’ll show you how to kill or force quit apps on an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus.

At this point, the app will be closed completely and won’t be running in the background anymore. If there are apps that are consuming a lot of battery on your iPhone, such as Facebook, WhatsApp, or Telegram, then you can force quit them to save battery.

If you wish to close multiple apps at once, then the process is quite similar except that you have to use two or more fingers to close the apps from the App Switcher. As mentioned earlier, we recommend that you avoid closing the apps that you use frequently.

Step 1: Double press the Home button to open the App Switcher.

Step 2: Swipe the cards to the left or the right until you reach the apps that you wish to close.

Step 3: Using three fingers, place each on an app’s preview card, then swipe up to the top. This allows you to close three apps at once. You can also use four fingers to close four apps, but it’s easier to force quit three apps at a time.
