How to use Reachability on iOS 7

To allow for one-handed usage of the larger screens on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple introduced a new feature called Reachability for the two devices. Reachability can be activated by double tapping — not physically pressing — the Home button, at which point the top half of the screen automatically shifts down towards the bottom so that your fingers can reach that area.

While older iPhones on iOS 7 do not necessarily need this feature, as Apple designed the iPhone 5s and previous iterations of the device with one-handed usage in mind, a new jailbreak tweak called Reachability7 by Mohammed Marbouh is still an interesting proof of concept that it can be done. After installing the package, a preferences menu is added to the Settings app for toggling on the tweak and setting the drop-down length.

You can also assign a custom Activator action for activating the tweak, meaning that double tapping the Home button is not the only way to use Reachability. Instead, you could activate the feature by triple pressing the Home button, swiping down alongside the left side of the Home screen or another gesture. Activator should come pre-installed through Cydia as a dependancy when you download Reachability7.

Reachability7 works on the Home screen and in all apps outside of Settings. The tweak does seem to have compatibility issues with Safari, however, that will likely need to be resolved in a future update. A previous Wi-Fi crashing issue upon rebooting has already been addressed in a minor update pushed out for the package. Watch the following demo video for a closer look at the tweak in action:

Perhaps an ever cooler application of this tweak is when you combine it with Ryan Petrich’s VideoPane. The latter is another useful jailbreak tweak that allows you to detach videos on iPhone into a separate, draggable pane, and the package works perfectly in conjunction with Reachability. We’ve grabbed the screenshot below from Reddit to share how the tweaks look side by side:

Reachability7 is free on the Cydia Store in the default BigBoss repo.
