On September 9, Apple will unveil new things. Primarily, it will be a new iPhone, or, as still rumored, new iPhones. Less than a month away from the announcement, while nothing is official, the one thing we’re practically certain of at this point is that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is coming. If you’re waiting for everything else, it could be a disappointing event.
Right around March or April, I realized that I was getting really excited about the next iPhone. It isn’t because my current phone, the iPhone 5s, is bad or that I dislike it, or even that I really want a bigger display. I just really like new devices, and I love playing with them. Sure, the iPhone 6 has a special place in my heart, and I’m certainly looking forward to getting a new daily driver for my phone, but the overall excitement would be the same even if I didn’t plan on picking it up personally.
But, even with iOS 8 unveiled, the new features outlined, and betas showcasing how those features work in the real world, my excitement began to get a bit tempered as the weeks went on. Now, not even two weeks into August but less than a month away from the September 9 event, I’m realizing something else entirely: I’m glad I’m only excited for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6.
To be fair, the iWatch is something that I’m holding out for, especially when it comes to the hope that it gets unveiled this year. However, with the sheer lack of leaked information, parts, or specific details (everything is generally still all over the place at this point), I’m not holding my breath that Apple has any plans in announcing the device this year. Maybe they did at one point, and no one can tell me that they’re not working on a wearable device of some kind right now in Cupertino HQ, but I just don’t have any confidence right now that it’s going to get announced anytime soon.
That could certainly change, and I’d love it if it happened. I’m just checking my expectations at the door.
More than that, though, I can’t help but be worried for the people who are waiting for the really big iPhone, or the 5.5-inch iPhone 6. It’s a device that’s been just as heavily rumored as the 4.7-inch model, perhaps even more so dating back several years in dark corners, but it’s one device that has seen a far less amount of leaks than the smaller variant. As it stands, if we were basing the plausibility of a device based on the sheer amount of leaks of parts and concepts, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is a done deal. It’s a lock. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6, though? Not so much.
There have been leaks for the rumored device, but when compared to the 4.7-inch leaks, they are less than marginal. For those who aren’t rabidly paying attention, one might not even know the leaked parts exist on the internet at this point. However, we’ve seen the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 in just about every angle we can think of, including close-ups of the camera, the front panel (more times than we can shake a stick at), and rear panel. We’ve seen what it looks on the inside, piece by piece.
Again, based on the leaks, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is what will be announced in September, and if the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 model exists (and I’m sure it does), it will be coming later. How much later? Well, that’s anyone’s guess at this point, right? It could be a new device that Apple launches in early 2015, which would mean they’d have two yearly refresh cycles for their iPhone lineup, but with an obvious difference between the two: screen sizes, and potentially features.
It’s no secret that we’ve heard on multiple occasions that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 could boast plenty of updated features when compared to the smaller variant, including an option for 128GB of built-in storage, optical image stabilization, and even the implementation of sapphire glass. Indeed, if Apple is going to wait to launch the larger iPhone, then adding these features to make the wait worth it for those who hold out would make sense.
For me, though? As it stands right now, I’m just happy that I’m excited for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, and not so much anything else. I’m hedging my bets that this is the model that gets announced, for sure, in September — and even if it isn’t the only model that gets announced, I still walk away from the presentation a happy camper. I’ve set the bar here, for just one model, the highly rumored variant, and anything else that Apple announces will only add to the excitement. I think that means I’m doing it right.
Then again, Apple could just announce a 4-inch iPhone 6 and troll everyone.
