What's the Difference Between iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus?

Apple today finally released the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the more premium and exclusive iPhone X. The three handsets might share the same internals but they do differ from each other in certain aspects.

After all, there is a reason why Apple is charging $999 for the iPhone X, with the other two iPhones carrying a lower price tag. Apple is not charging a premium just for the bezel-less OLED display. The iPhone X does come with a bunch of features that are not found on the other two iPhones. So, let’s see what exactly makes the iPhone X better than the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus below.

Design, Display, and Dimensions

  • The three phones differ from each other primarily in terms of their design
  • While all the three phones are made from glass, the iPhone X features a bezel-less edge-to-edge OLED display at the front
  • The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, on the other hand, feature a front design similar to the iPhone 7 — right down to the capacitive Home button with an integrated Touch ID scanner
  • The iPhone 8 features a 4.7-inch 750p display with 326 ppi, while the iPhone 8 Plus features a 5.5-inch 1080p display with 401 ppi
    • The iPhone X comes with a bigger 5.8-inch OLED display with a 1125 x 2436 resolution and 458 ppi
    • The OLED display on the iPhone X has rounded corners, while the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus displays have square edges
  • The 5.8-inch OLED display on the iPhone X features Dolby Vision and HDR10 support
    • The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus do not support either
  • Thanks to the bezel-less design, the iPhone X is smaller than iPhone 8 Plus despite coming with a bigger display
    • The iPhone X is 7.7 mm thick, 143.6 mm tall, and 70.9 mm wide
    • The iPhone 8 is 7.3 mm thick, 138.4 mm tall, and 67.3 mm wide
    • The iPhone 8 Plus is 7.5 mm thick, 158.4 mm tall, and 78.1 mm wide

Chipset, RAM, and Storage

  • All three phones are powered by Apple’s 6-core A11 Bionic chip
    • It features a dual-core Neural engine and M11 motion coprocessor
  • The iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus feature 3GB RAM
    • The iPhone 8 features only 2GB RAM
  • All three phones are available in 64GB and 256GB storage capacities

Biometric Verification

  • The iPhone X features Face ID for facial recognition
    • The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus feature a second-generation Touch ID sensor integrated into the capacitive home button at the front

Camera

  • The iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X feature a dual-12MP camera setup at the rear
    • The primary 12MP shooter on both handsets features an f/1.8 lens and OIS
    • Both phones also offer Portrait and Portrait Lighting modes
  • The secondary 12MP telephoto lens, however, is different on both devices
    • The 12MP telephoto lens on the iPhone X features OIS and an f/2.4 aperture
    • On the iPhone 8 Plus, the 12MP telephoto lens lacks OIS and has a smaller f/2.8 aperture
  • The iPhone 8 only features a single 12MP f/1.8 aperture shooter with OIS
  • All three phones feature a new color filter and deeper pixels for improved photo quality
    • They also come with Quad-LED True Tone flash
  • The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus feature a FaceTime HD camera with 7MP resolution
    • The iPhone X features a 7MP TrueDepth camera
    • This allows the handset to offer Portrait and Portrait Lighting mode for selfies as well

Connectivity

  • All three phones feature LTE-A, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi ac, and a Lightning port

Battery

  • The iPhone 8 Plus has almost the same battery life as the iPhone 7 Plus
    • The iPhone X offers 2 hours of additional battery life over the iPhone 8
    • The iPhone 8 offers the same battery life as the iPhone 7
  • All three phones support Qi wireless charging and fast wired charging

Price and Availability

  • The iPhone 8 was Apple’s cheapest iPhone announced today despite its price tag being bumped to $699
    • The iPhone 8 Plus also saw its price being bumped to $799
    • As for the iPhone X, its 64GB and 256GB variants are priced at $999 and $1,149
  • The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus go up for pre-order on September 15
    • Pre-orders for iPhone X go live on October 27
  • The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will hit retail stores on September 22
    • The iPhone X goes on sale in 55 countries on November 3

Also, it looks like the SIM-free or unlocked iPhone X won’t be available at launch in the U.S, whereas you can buy a SIM-free or unlocked iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus when the pre-orders open on September 15. It is possible that the SIM free or unlocked iPhone X will be available when pre-orders open on October 27, but Apple usually delays the launch of the unlocked iPhone by a month in the U.S. Unlocked iPhone X would be available in other countries when pre-order opens.
