It was only a matter of time if you have known the iPhone hacking geniuses over at the iPhone Dev Team. They have been working hard since the now in-famous iPhone v1.1.1 update and have delivered again by releasing the latest version of their free GUI-based SIM unlocking solution "anySIM v1.1" for virgin (details available after the jump) iPhone OS v1.1.1.
If you go by the instructions available to unlock the iPhone OS v1.1.1 it seems like this time round the iPhone Dev Team have done one better then the not-for-free unlocking solution from iPhoneSIMFree by making it a lot more easier to unlock the iPhone.
The great folks at iPhone Dev Team had first released anySIM to unlock iPhone running on OS v1.0.2, however if you have been following the latest on the iPhone since the latest update you would know that upgrading to iPhone OS v1.1.1 resulted in bricking iPhone’s that were unlocked.
Okay, before you get excited and run off to check out the latest version of anySIM, let us understand what it exactly means for you?
This solution is currently only applicable for all those who had bought their new iPhones recently with OS v1.1.1 running on it or iPhones that were upgraded from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 but had NEVER unlocked their iPhone.
So all those you had unlocked their iPhone running on OS v1.0.2 will need to wait for a bit longer as the iPhone Dev Team is currently working on a “re-virginizer” which is essentially a tool to revert your iPhone back to factory settings i.e. locked state after which I guess you should be able to use anySIM v1.1 to unlock the iPhone.
However, till then if you are using an iPhone OS v1.0.2 which has been unlocked then be patient and DO NOT update your iPhone to OS v1.1.1 at this point as this solution does not fix the baseband problems that is caused by updating an unlocked 1.0.2 iPhone up to 1.1.1.
Also based on information provided by Erica Sudan over at Tuaw, the latest version of anySIM is NOT intended for phones that will be updated, I guess it is more a way to prevent people from upgrading to future iPhone OS updates to avoid the issues encountered by iPhone owners who had used their solution of unlocking which had resulted in bricking the iPhone when they upgraded to iPhone OS v1.1.1.
I would in fact also recommend others to wait as Erica quite rightly points out that although the latest free unlocking solution has been tested to make sure it avoids corruption it is still very new and has not had a lot of field testing enough yet.
In case you still plan to use anySIM to unlock your iPhone then the instructions for installing and then unlocking your iPhone are as follows courtesy iPhone Atlas.
- Jailbreak your iPhone with software/firmware 1.1.1 and set it up to install third-party applications via the steps in this article.
- Once your iPhone is setup to install third-party applications, use these steps to put AnySIM on it:
For Mac OS X
- Download AnySIM 1.1 (from this link or this mirror link) and expand the ZIP file.
- Drag the resulting file “anySIM” (full name, anySIM.app) to your /Applications Folder.
- Open Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities) and type the following: scp -r /Applications/anySIM.app root@IPADDRESS:/Applications/ replacing IPADDRESS with the IP address of your iPhone (you can determine your iPhone’s IP Address by tapping Settings, then “Wi-Fi,” — tap the arrow next to the name of the Wi-Fi network to which your iPhone and look at the IP Address).
- Restart your iPhone.
- Run the AnySIM application to unlock your iPhone.
Here are some tips from Erica Sudan that you will find useful:
- As AnySIM works, it switches off your WiFi until you reboot.
- The team says if you get a "failed to unlock" on 1.0.2, you’re still probably unlocked. Reboot and give it a try.
