In just over a week from now, Apple will be announcing the 2019 iPhone 11 lineup and the iPhone 11R. The company has already sent out press invites for the launch event on September 10. While the handsets are not yet officially unveiled, thanks to leaks, a lot about them is already known. Below is everything we know about the 2019 iPhone 11R, iPhone 11, and the iPhone 11 Pro features.
Apple is not planning a massive overhaul of the iPhone lineup for 2020. What this means is that for this year, the changes are going to be incremental in nature. Apple is going to further build on the iPhone XS series from last year and make improvements to it for the iPhone 11 series. So, don’t expect any major design changes or any breakthrough features from this year’s iPhones as that’s not going to happen.
Here’s a look at all the iPhone 11 features based on leaks we have covered over the last few months.
2019 iPhone 11 Features Leaked: Everything We Know
Design – Squarish Camera Bump, Frosted Rear Glass
The 2019 iPhone 11 lineup is not going to pack any major changes in terms of design. The design language is going to be the same as the iPhone X/XS series. The only noticeable change will be the squarish camera bump at the rear to accommodate the triple-camera system.
Apple will be using frosted glass on the iPhones this time around and it will be a single piece of glass that will cover the camera sensors as well. This might seem like a small change but the frosted glass will help refresh the look of the iPhone 11 series.
A recent rumor claimed that the new iPhones will come with a matte finish compared to the glossy finish of the existing models. Additionally, the iPhone 11 series will feature shatter-resistant technology and feature even higher water-resistance capabilities. The existing iPhones feature an IP68 certification which is the highest rating available for consumer devices so it will be interesting to see how Apple further improves this.
Display – No 3D Touch
Apple is going to stick to the same display sizes for its 2019 iPhone 11 series across the board — the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 and the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro/Max with OLED displays, and the 6.1-inch 2019 iPhone XR with an LCD display.
Apple will reportedly be using the same OLED panel on the iPhone 11 series as Samsung uses on its Galaxy S10/Note 10 series. The displays on the latter are among the best in the market so it should not be surprising that Apple is sourcing quality OLED panels from Samsung.
Apart from yearly incremental improvements, one of the major changes that we are going to see with the iPhone 11 series this year is the lack of 3D Touch. Multiple rumors have now claimed that Apple will be ditching 3D Touch on the iPhone 11 series. Instead, the company will offer Haptic Touch on these phones which it debuted with the iPhone XR last year.
Camera – Triple Camera System
The highlight of the iPhone 11 series is going to be the triple-camera system at the rear. The iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro will feature a triple-camera system which will include a new ultra-wide angle shooter. The 2019 iPhone XR will also gain a new telephoto sensor at the rear.
iPhones were once widely regarded as having the best camera in a smartphone. However, that is no longer the case, with even Google’s $400 Pixel 3a rivaling the camera performance of the iPhone XS.
For this year, rumor points to Apple greatly improving the iPhone’s camera performance, especially in low-light scenarios. The company will also be smartly using the triple-camera system to offer some novel new features. This includes taking photos from all the three camera sensors at once and then merging them into one to fix any issues in the resulting photo.
The powerful new ISP in A13 chip inside the new iPhone 11 series will also allow Apple to offer live video effects.
Bigger Battery, Reverse Wireless Charging
Apple has always been conservative with the battery capacity of its iPhones. The 3,174mAh battery of the iPhone XS Max is the largest battery the company has ever used in an iPhone. That will change with the release of the 2019 iPhone 11 series as Apple intends on bumping the battery capacity across the lineup. This should lead to the new iPhones offering battery life.
The bigger batteries will also be necessary since Apple will be offering reverse wireless charging on the iPhone 11 series.
We have already seen this feature on the likes of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Galaxy S10 series so Apple is simply playing catch up here. Nonetheless, the feature will be useful since it will allow users to wirelessly charge their AirPods while on the go.
Improved Face ID
The Face ID system on the 2019 iPhone 11 series is also getting an upgrade. As per rumors, Apple will use a new Face ID sensor with a wider field of view that will allow it to work in more scenarios and reduce false unlock attempts. The wider FoV should make it easier for one to unlock the iPhone 11 while it is kept flat on a table or when one is not in direct line of sight of the phone.
A13 Chip
The 2019 iPhones will come with Apple’s new A13 chip. The company has been consistently setting new performance records with its mobile chips and the A13 should be no exception in this regard. The chip is rumored to be based on TSMC’s enhanced 7nm fabrication process. It will also come with a dedicated co-processor known as “AMX” which will handle heavy math-related tasks. This will help reduce the load on the main processor for AR-related tasks.
RAM & Storage
There have not been any leaks in this regards. Knowing Apple, it is likely that we will see the iPhone 11 series and the 2019 iPhone XR ship with the same storage variants as last year. This means the iPhone 11 series will be available in 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. The 2019 iPhone XR will be available in 64GB and 128GB storage variants. Apple could also offer the iPhone 11 Pro with 1TB storage.
As for RAM, the iPhone 11 series should ship with 6GB RAM for better performance, with the 2019 iPhone XR seeing its RAM being bumped to 4GB.
iPhone 11 Launch and Release Date
Apple will be unveiling the new iPhones at the “By innovation only” event on September 10. We expect iPhone 11 to be available for pre-order on September 13 and will be available in retail stores on September 20.
