Many of the jailbreak tools that have been developed for recent versions of iOS, such as iOS 9 and iOS 10, are semi-untethered jailbreaks. Whenever you iPhone restarts, the jailbreak is disabled, and if you wish to re-jailbreak, you can do so by running the jailbreak app again from your device.
When a semi-untethered jailbreak is disabled, all the tweaks and jailbreak apps that you’ve installed will stop working and Cydia starts to crash. To get back to normal, you’ll have to re-jailbreak your device. This kind of behavior is much safer than untethered jailbreaks because if you install an unstable tweak by accident and it causes your device to freeze or lag constantly, then you can easily restart your device to disable the jailbreak and remove the faulty tweak.
Here’s a list of some jailbreak tools that are Semi-Untethered:
- Yalu jailbreak for iOS 10
- extra_recipe + YaluX jailbreak for iOS 10
- Phoenix jailbreak for iOS 9.3.5
- Pangu jailbreak for iOS 9.0 – iOS 9.3.3
- Home Depot jailbreak for iOS 9.1 – iOS 9.3.4
If you’ve jailbroken your iPhone or iPad using a semi-untethered jailbreak tool, then read the following tutorial to find out how to re-enable after your device restarts.
How to Re-Jailbreak a Semi-Untethered Jailbreak
Step 1: On your jailbroken iPhone or iPad, go to the Home screen and open the jailbreak app.
Step 2: Tap on the jailbreak button to begin the jailbreak process. The screenshot below shows the Yalu jailbreak app, but it is similar for other semi-untethered jailbreaks.
Step 3: Your device may respring several times during the jailbreak process. Once done, it will boot up to the Lock screen after which you can begin using the jailbreak tweaks and apps as normal as well as browse the Cydia store without crashing.
How to Re-Sign a Semi-Untethered Jailbreak
When you install a semi-untethered jailbreak using Cydia Impactor and a free Apple ID, the certificate of the jailbreak app lasts for 7 days only, after which the app will start to crash. To fix this problem, you’ll have to re-sign the jailbreak app via Cydia Impactor again. Here’s how:
Step 1: Remove the jailbreak app from your device.
Step 2: Connect your jailbroken iPhone or iPad to your computer and open Cydia Impactor.
Step 3: Drag and drop the jailbreak IPA file onto Cydia Impactor.
Step 4: Enter your Apple ID and password as prompted. This information will be sent to Apple to generate a signing certificate for the IPA file.
Step 5: Cydia Impactor will begin reinstalling the jailbreak app onto your device. Once done, the app’s icon will appear on your device’s Home screen.
Step 7: Press the “Trust” button, then go to the Home screen and you should be able to open the jailbreak app and perform a jailbreak if required.
You have to repeat this process every 7 days to re-sign the jailbreak app and avoid crash issues. After the 7 days period, you can continue using your jailbreak tweaks and Cydia as normal unless your device reboots and the jailbreak gets disabled. At this point, you’ve have to re-sign the jailbreak app.
