The best stories always have a bit of drama in them, and it looks like there’s a bit of back-and-forth popping up when it comes to new iPads being announced in September.

Up until recently, the Rumor Mill had the masses believing that new iPads were on the way, and, back then, that it was probably the iPad Air 3 and, perhaps, a proper followup in the iPad mini line. Of course, the oft-rumored iPad Pro, with its giant screen, was constantly in the wind, with whispers suggesting that Apple was hard at work for a release sometime in 2016. As such, the main focus of Apple’s September event would be new iPhones, as usual, the Apple Watch in some capacity, and, now more recently, a major overhaul to the Apple TV.

Then, seemingly without warning, on September 2, a report surfaced that suggested Apple was indeed planning on showcasing new iPads at its September media event, and the iPad Air 3 wasn’t going to be one of them. Instead, the iPad Pro was fitted for its upcoming debut on stage, and the iPad mini 4 would find its way up there, at some point during the announcement as well. Since then, reports have piled on that the iPad Pro will be unveiled on September 9, practically making it a foregone conclusion for the online media that Apple was ready to unveil the giant tablet.

Enter John Gruber, a well-known entity within the Apple universe and someone that has a strong track record of calling out Apple’s plans. Gruber, by way of his site Daring Fireball, has posted his thoughts on Apple’s media event taking place tomorrow, September 9, and admits that he’s going against the grain in his prediction: Apple won’t be unveiling new iPads on September 9. That includes the iPad Pro, or even the iPad mini 4.

Gruber believes that Apple will follow its own precedent when announcing new products on September 9, and that while Apple’s event will be busy, he doesn’t expect it to be overcrowded with products and talking points. Specifically, Gruber believes that Apple will unveil the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, talk about watchOS 2 and its third-party app support, new Watch bands, and, at some point, the Apple TV 4.

There are several different reasons why Gruber believes this is the case, and simply put there’s a lot of reason to see where he’s coming from. The new iPhones are said to incorporate Force Touch in some capacity, and could even be called “3D display” as a next-generation aspect to the technology, so Apple is going to need to take some time to demonstrate how that will work on the iPhone during the event. Then, on top of that, the Apple TV is launching with an altogether new platform as its base, with a ton of new features baked in, new App Store support and more. Again, a lot to go over and talk about.

He also points out that announcing all of these things, including two new iPads (even if the iPad mini 4 doesn’t get much stage time), would mean that the announcements that Apple loves to talk about will be rushed, and some products or technologies might get overlooked altogether. That’s not what Apple will want to do when launching new iPhones, a new set-top box, or even a 13-inch iPad.

Moreover, Apple typically holds a smaller event in October where it discusses its desktop platform and new hardware, and this is an event that Gruber believes is better suited for the iPad lineup. Here, Apple could take its time in discussing and showcasing the new features in OS X El Capitan, show off new hardware like a 21-inch Retina iMac, and still have plenty of time to show off what makes the iPad Pro worth buying.

Finally, the shipping date, which seems to be November by all accounts up to this point. With that in mind, announcing the product in September doesn’t make much sense, either, and that’s just another reason why Gruber believes the iPad Pro will be announced not tomorrow, but at Apple’s smaller media event in October.

The full breakdown is certainly worth the read.

Do you think Apple will unveil the iPad Pro (or iPad mini 4) tomorrow?

Update:

Gruber has published another update. He now claims that he has received information from his sources that today’s event is going to be the only event this fall. So if Apple plans to launch the iPad Pro, it has to be at today’s event. feels that it doesn
