iPhone Dev team has released a new version of Redsn0w, which now allows users who have successfully unlocked their iPhone using SAM to take a backup of the activation key that will be useful in the future.

iPhone Dev team has provided the following information about the new feature in Redsn0w 0.9.10b8 on their blog:

redsn0w 0.9.10b8 adds the ability to backup arbitrary directories or files from your device into a zip file on your Mac or PC.  The new button is Extras->Even More->Backup and it requires your device to be jailbroken with the afc2 service enabled (most jailbreaks include that).  By default it will backup your activation records from /var/root/Library/Lockdown, which is useful for everyone taking advantage of today’s SAM unlock using Loktar_Sun’s trick (more on that in a later post!).

If you haven’t unlocked your iPhone, then check out our step-by-step guide to unlock your iPhone using SAM. After you’ve successfully unlocked your iPhone, you can follow these simple instructions to take a backup of the activation ticket using Redsn0w 0.9.10b8:

Step 1: Download Redsn0w for Windows from this link and Redsn0w for Mac from this link and save the application in a folder named “Redsn0w” on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application to the Redsn0w folder. Navigate back to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application.

Step 3: After launching Redsn0w, click on the Extras button and then click on the Even more button.

Step 4: You should now see the new Backup button, click on it and you will be prompted to enter the path to backup. Leave it as it is “/var/root/Library/Lockdown” and click on the Ok button.

Step 5: After Redsn0w has successfully backed up the folder it will inform you that the Backup has been created and you will find the file in the Redsn0w folder.

That’s it. So if you need to use the activation ticket in the future, you know where to find it.

You can also take a backup of the activation key using iFile or SSH into the “/var/root/Library/Lockdown” folder on your iPhone and copy the contents to your computer.

At the moment, we’re not sure how the activation ticket can be used, but MuscleNerd has tweeted that it will be useful in the future:

Be sure to save the unlock activation ticket from this trick..it will likely be useful for a long time! Even if Apple fixes the method.

iPhone Dev team plans to provide more details about the SAM unlocking trick, so we’ll let you know as soon as they provide more details.
