Apple seeded tvOS 9.2 beta for the fourth generation Apple TV few days back, which comes with some nice new features to the stock system that shipped out with the devices. We reviewed some of the new tvOS 9.2 features, which includes a revamped app switcher, the addition of folders, new supported languages for Siri, and more. If you want to check out these new features we are going to show you how to install tvOS beta on your Apple TV.

The current seed is only for developers so you will need access to a developer account in order to download tvOS 9.2 beta 1. You can create a developer account by following this link. You should also download Xcode 7.3 beta if you are going to be doing any work with the Apple TV on the new beta. Folks with Xcode 7 will not be able to take screen shots, or use many of the device functions without updating to Xcode 7.3 beta in conjunction with grabbing the tvOS 9.2 beta.

In order to install the OS you will need a USB type-c cable which you can find easily on Amazon. Don’t bank on finding it at your local Best Buy, because I checked three local ones myself, and none of them carried the cable.

Step 1.

Download tvOS 9.2 beta 1

Step 2.

Plug in your Apple TV using the USB type-c cable and open up iTunes.

Step. 3

In iTunes, select the Apple TV icon.

Then Option + click (Mac) or Shift + click (Windows) the Restore button and find the tvOS IPSW file we downloaded in step 1.

Restore Apple TV

Step 4.

Wait for your device to restore to the beta.

Note: Now, there is once caveat to updating to the beta version. You will need to reinstall all of your applications and reconfigure your Wi-Fi and user settings. This is definitely a very annoying process, but Apple suggests using these betas on non-primary devices. But until there is a way to back up information and apps from the Apple TV to iTunes or iCloud, you going to have treat it as a new device with each beta.
