In a fast-moving opening keynote of WWDC 2019, Apple unveiled iOS 13. The new version of the OS comes with a number of new features and even performance enhancements. What Apple did not mention during its keynote was the compatibility of the iOS 13 with existing iPhones.
As it turns out, iOS 13 drops support for a number of popular iPhones which is going to surprise many especially since iOS 12 did not supported the same set of iPhones or iPads as iOS 11.
iOS 13 drops support for iPhone 5s and the massively popular iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It only supports iPhone SE, iPhone 6s and higher.
iOS 13 is compatible with the following iPhones:
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XR
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone SE
Essentially, Apple has dropped support for all iPhones that were powered by its A8 chip or older.
The iPhone SE makes the cut and supports iOS 13 thanks to its more powerful A9 chip. Surprisingly, the iPadOS supports the iPad mini 4 which is powered by an A8 chip. That’s the same chip found inside the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
iPadOS is compatible with the following iPads:
- iPad Air 3
- 2018 iPad Pro
- 2017 iPad Pro
- 6th gen. iPad
- 5th gen. iPad
- iPad Air 2
- iPad mini 5
- iPad mini 4
Apple dropping support for iPhone 6 with iOS 13 is definitely a surprising move. This is likely going to force a few million users to upgrade to a new iPhone later this year.
