Apple highlighted all the key new features of iOS 13 at the opening keynote of WWDC 2019 but the OS comes with so many new features that the company simply did not have the time to go through it all. One such little new feature in iOS 13 is Optimized Battery Charging which is aimed at further improving the battery lifespan of iPhones.

As the name suggests, the new feature optimizes the battery charging rate to increase the lifespan of the battery. Apple says that your iPhone will learn your daily charging habits and wait to charge from 80-100 percent until you need to use it.

iOS 13 Optimized Battery Charging

What this means is that if you put your iPhone to charge every night while going to sleep, the device will learn the charging habits and automatically prevent charging the battery from 80-100 percent until an hour or so before it estimates that you are going to remove your phone from the charger.

Batteries inside smartphones wear faster when they are charged above 80 percent. That’s why it is recommended that users charge their smartphone to around 80 percent and then top it off whenever required. This helps in increasing the overall battery lifespan and reduces the wear on it.

Since this feature learns from your daily routine, it is possible that it can mess things up every once in a while especially when you are traveling or when there’s a sudden change in your schedule. That’s why Apple includes an option to turn off Optimized Battery Charging in iOS 13 as well.

Given the amount of flak Apple received for throttling performance of older iPhones, it is great to see the company proactively taking steps to increase the battery lifespan of its devices and be clear about it to users upfront.
