Most of us swear by the ruggedness of early Nokia devices like the Nokia 1100 and 6600. However, a recent incident has proved that modern devices are not inferior when it comes to ruggedness. An iPhone 6s has not only survived a fall from the plane but also the harsh Icelandic conditions for one whole year.

Photographer Haukur Snorrason’s iPhone 6s fell into the Skafta river in South Iceland a year ago. The photographer knew that there was no way he could retrieve the device from a massive overflowing river. A year later Snorrasson received a call from people who had found his phone while hiking.

Last year, photographer Haukur Snorrason was on an aerial photo tour of the Skaftá river in South Iceland to grab pictures of the yearly glacier river floods. Unfortunately, when he grabbed his iPhone to film the flood, the phone got swept away by a gust of wind. Falling 60 meters (200 feet) down on rocky terrain — where a massive river was overflowing and rupturing roads — the time came for Haukur to say goodbye to his phone forever – or so he thought.

Or so he thought, until 13 months later, when he received a phone call from people that had found his phone while hiking. After falling from a plane, and spending over a year exposed to the harsh Icelandic elements, it still worked!

Thats not all, the entire episode was recorded on video and the footage is a testimony to iPhone’s toughness. As you can see in the video, the fall was pretty harsh, however, the device has landed on what seems like a patch of moss. Perhaps the moss softened the blow and helped the iPhone 6s survive more than a year in Icelandic weather.

Last time around an iPhone X was fished out of a lakebed and the device seemed to work just fine. That being said, a lot of factors come into play when a phone is dropped. The angle of impact, surface and the intensity of impact decide the fate of your phone.
