In less than a week from now, Apple will be introducing the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus at an event that is being held on September 7th at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are going to buck the trend from Apple’s usual iPhone cycle by recycling the same design which the company first debuted with the iPhone 6 in 2014.
This is likely going to disappoint a lot of users, but leaks suggest that Apple has improved in some key areas on its upcoming new iPhones. Lets have a look at some of the major new features that the upcoming iPhones are going to pack.
New Colors
While the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are going to sport the same design as the iPhone 6/6s, the antenna lines at the rear have been repositioned to give it a cleaner look. While not substantial, the cleaner look will likely go very well with the new black color options that Apple plans on launching with its new iPhones. Many iPhone users have been wanting a black iPhone since years, and it looks like this year, Apple is going to give them two different finishes of black to choose from: dark black and piano black.
Water-resistance
The design of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus remaining largely the same as their predecessor might disappoint a few, but Apple will be adding one major ace up their sleeve: water-resistance. The new iPhones are going to be water-resistant with an IPX7 rating. This means that they will be easily able to survive being dunked in water for up to 30 mins in 1m depth without any issues.
Considering that thousands of people end up dropping their iPhone into the water at one point every year, the water-resistant capability of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are going to be highly appreciated by them. It can, in fact — along with the improved camera — turn out to be a huge selling point for the new iPhones.

Improved Camera
iPhones were at one point regarded as having the best camera found in a smartphone. However, the iSight camera of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s has been unable to match up to the likes of Galaxy S6/S7, and LG G5. The difference is especially visible in low-light where the iPhones usually output a very dark image, while the likes of Galaxy S7 are able to capture significantly more light.
This year, Apple plans on making the iSight camera of the iPhones their biggest selling point. Leaks suggest the 12MP shooter on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus getting substantial upgrades. Not only is Apple increasing the sensor size with larger pixels (1.3u), but it is also pairing it to a wider aperture lens that will let them intake more light. This should result in the new iPhones coming with a camera that can take some amazing photos even in low-light.
And like the last 2 years, the iPhone 7 Plus will offer some extra oomph in terms of camera performance. It will feature a dual 12MP rear-facing camera for improved dynamic range and more details. A new leak suggests that we can see Apple offering optical zoom and Lytro camera-like capabilities to focus anywhere after an image is taken on the iPhone 7 Plus. If true, this could be a game changer in terms of smartphone camera performance for sure.
Significantly Faster A10 Chip
Let’s be honest here: the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus don’t feel slow almost a year after their launch in any way. But that will not stop Apple from including a more powerful A10 chip inside the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The extra 12MP sensor at the rear of the iPhone 7 Plus will also lead Apple to include 3GB of RAM on it. The extra RAM will be required for the additional imaging capabilities that the handset will pack. It should, however, also help in improving the multitasking performance of the device by quite a bit.
Leaks suggest the A10 chip will be more powerful than the A9X chip that Apple currently offers inside the iPad Pro, with a clock speed of up to 2.4GHz. Apart from being powerful, this new chip should also be more power efficient, which when coupled with the slightly larger batteries, should help the new iPhones to offer better battery life than their predecessors.
Better Battery Life
Along with a more power efficient A10 chip, Apple will also be including a larger battery on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. While leaks point to the new iPhones coming with only a 10% larger battery, it should translate into some noticeable battery life improvements thanks to efficiency improvements in A10 chip and other components.
32GB Base Storage
After years of criticism, Apple finally plans on offering the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with a minimum of 32GB storage — double of what it offers with the iPhone 6/6s. Additionally, leaks point to the company offering the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with 256GB storage capacity. In fact, the company seems to be planning on upgrading the storage tier of the iPhones across the board. It will apparently offer the new iPhones in 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage variants.
While a 256GB model will please a few, offering 32GB storage space on the base iPhone will be appreciated by the majority of iPhone 7 buyers. And replacing the 64GB storage variant of the iPhone with a 128GB is a move that is probably going to surprise (and shock) almost every smartphone OEM out there.
Pressure-Sensitive Home Button
Right from their inception, iPhones have featured a physical home button. With the iPhone 7, Apple plans to retire the physical home button in favor of a pressure-sensitive home button. However, to offer the feeling of the button being actually pressed, Apple will be using Force Touch on the handsets — similar to how it uses the technology on its MacBook lineup to offer a feeling of the trackpad clicking when pressed.
While not a big deal in itself, a capacitive home button will help in improving the water-resistant capabilities of the new iPhones.
No 3.5mm Audio Jack
The lack of a 3.5mm audio jack is going to be a deal breaker for potentially thousands of iPhone buyers out there. But, is it actually going to be a reason for you to buy the handset? If yes, drop in a comment and let us know why!
Wireless AirPods
To make up for the missing 3.5mm audio jack, Apple will not only be including a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter but it will also separately sell wireless earphones called AirPods to go along with it. There have been contradicting leaks on whether Apple plans on bundling wireless AirPods with the iPhone 7 or not, but given how costly wireless earbuds usually are and knowing Apple, the chances of this happening are slim.
