Google released the highly anticipated Google Maps last night, but iPad users were left disappointed as it was compatible with only iPhone and iPod touch.
But if you’ve a jailbroken iPad, the good news is that jailbreak tweaks such as RetinaPad and FullForce allow you to run Google Maps for iPhone in fullscreen mode on the iPad.
So how does it work?
Here’s some background. When Apple launched the iPad in 2010, it allowed users to install iPhone apps (due to the limited iPad apps available at that time), which could be used in 2x mode, using the pixel doubling technique.
While it was a good strategy adopted by Apple at that time to give users access to a larger number of iPhone apps from day one, it had a downside. The non-Retina graphics become fuzzy when blown up to 2X mode.
So at that time, iOS jailbreak developer – Ryan Petrich had released a nifty little paid jailbreak tweak called RetinaPad to fix this problem once iPhone 4 with Retina Display was launched. It uses Retina graphics of apps designed for the iPhone 4 or later on the iPad instead of the default non-Retina iPhone graphics, which results in clean graphics without any pixelation.
FullForce – a free jailbreak tweak, which is also developed by Petrich allows users to run iPhone apps in fullscreen mode on their jailbroken iPad.
The good news is that both FullForce and RetinaPad will allow you to run the Google Maps app in fullscreen mode. Check out the screenshots of the Google Maps app running on a jailbroken iPad in full screen mode:
