With rapid technological advancements over the last few years, Bluetooth connectivity has become commonplace in in-car infotainment systems. And it makes a lot of sense as well since it makes one’s daily life really convenient.
Step into your car, your iPhone automatically connects to your car’s infotainment system, and when you are driving, you can easily receive or make calls without having to ever touch your phone. Even better, your iPhone will automatically start playing back audio from the last audio source. So, if you were listening to a podcast, your iPhone will automatically start playing that when it connects to your car’s infotainment system.
In other cases, it will start playing songs from your music library. This is an added convenience for people who like listening to music while traveling, but there are others who don’t want their iPhone to start blaring out music over their vehicle’s infotainment system every time they sit in their car. For them, this is a problem.
While the problem itself is pretty simple, Apple does not provide an option to prevent audio from auto-playing when your iPhone connects to a car’s infotainment system. Due to this, there’s no clear solution for this issue. There’s no need to lose hope though as there are a few things that you can still try to help resolve the issue or keep the problem at bay.
Disable Autoplay Settings in the Vehicle’s Infotainment System
Apple might not provide the option to disable audio from auto-playing when it connects to your vehicle’s infotainment system, but there’s a possibility that your vehicle’s OEM might. Dig into the settings of your car’s infotainment system to see if there’s an option to disable music from auto-playing. If yes, well and good. Your problem is solved. If not, well try the other steps mentioned below.
Restrict CarPlay
If you are running iOS 13 or newer versions, you can prevent CarPlay from continuing music playback when you step into your car. To do so, just follow the steps below:
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on Screen Time.
Step 2: in the menu that appears, scroll down and tap on Content &Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps.
Step 3: Here, just turn off the toggle beside CarPlay to disable autoplay for music when you step into your car.
Kill the Audio App
If you have the podcast or audiobook open in the background on your iPhone then it will automatically start audio playback when it connects to your vehicle’s infotainment system. So, while Apple might suggest otherwise, in such a scenario, you should force close the audio app on your iPhone to prevent it from auto-playing content from your library.
Ask Siri
If you own an iPhone 6s or newer, you can simply shout “Hey Siri” and ask it to “stop playing music” every time your vehicle’s infotainment system starts playing music. This is the perfect solution for those who want their music to automatically play more often than not.
Use a Silent Music Track
If you don’t use Apple Music and carry your own music library around on your iPhone, you can add the “A a a a Very Good Song” to your library. This song will automatically take alphabetical precedence over any other song in your library. And since this is a silent music track, there will be no music blaring out from your vehicle’s speakers despite your iPhone streaming the song to it.
