Tips For Siri’s Dictation Feature [iPhone 4S]

One of the useful features of Siri – iPhone 4S’ intelligent assistant feature is the Dictation feature.

Jim Rhoades of Crush Apps has compiled a list of commands that Siri can understand while taking dictation. It should help you use the feature more effectively.

With Siri, you can press and hold the home button to activate Siri on the keyboard in any application and then utilize Siri’s speech recognition to enter the text.

Here’s the exhaustive list of commands that Siri can understand while taking dictation:

  • new line – move to the next line
  • new paragraph – to start a new paragraph
  • all caps – to make the next word all uppercase
  • all caps on … all caps off – to make part of what you say uppercase
  • no caps – to make the next word lowercase
  • no caps on … no caps off – to make sure part of what you say is all lowercase
  • space bar – to prevent a hyphen from appearing in a normally hyphenated word
  • period – .
  • comma – ,
  • apostrophe – ‘ (though in most cases apostrophes are automatically included)
  • exclamation point –  !
  • question mark – ?
  • ampersand – &
  • asterisk – *
  • open parenthesis – (
  • close parenthesis – )
  • open bracket – [
  • close bracket – ]
  • open brace – {
  • close brace – }
  • dash: –
  • hyphen –
  • em dash —
  • percent sign – %
  • copyright sign – ©
  • registered sign – ®
  • section sign – §
  • dollar sign – $
  • cent sign – ¢
  • degree sign – °
  • caret – ^
  • at sign – @
  • pound sterling sign – £
  • pound sign – #
  • greater than sign – >
  • less than sign – <
  • forward slash – /
  • back slash – \

Since Siri’s speech recognition technology is powered by Nuance, other iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users can use some of these commands (strangely not all) using Nuance’s Dragon Dictation app (App Store link).
