The launch of Reliance Jio has left many iPhone owners in India in a tizzy. Despite being 4G support, Reliance Jio does not work properly with the iPhones, which is ironic considering the handsets support almost every other 4G network in the world. The lack of any proper communication from Reliance on this front has not helped things either.
So, in this post, let me clear all your confusion regarding Reliance Jio support on iPhones.
Q) Can I use Reliance Jio with iPhone?
A) Yes, you can. Not all iPhone models are compatible with Reliance Jio’s network though.
Q) Do the iPhones even support Reliance Jio’s network? If yes, which models?
A) While there is no official confirmation from Reliance, the following iPhones are reported to work properly on Reliance Jio network with voice call support:
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPhone SE
The iPhone 5s supports the bands used by Reliance Jio, but it does not support VoLTE. So, while you can get data to work on the phone, you cannot use the phone to make calls. The iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c do not support Reliance Jio network at all.
Q) What about VoLTE? How does it matter if my iPhone does not support Jio’s VoLTE network?
A) Reliance Jio uses VoLTE exclusively to make calls. This means that if your handset does not support VoLTE, you cannot make calls using your Jio SIM. In such cases, you can still use Jio’s data network for browsing and downloading purposes.
Q) My iPhone is fully compatible with Reliance Jio’s network yet I am unable to make calls. Why?
A) Unlike Android phones, iPhones do not show any VoLTE symbol in their status bar to confirm that they are using VoLTE. This makes it tough to confirm if VoLTE is properly working on your iPhone or not. Nonetheless, if you own any of the iPhone model listed in the compatibility list above, you should be able to make voice calls on Reliance Jio.
If not, there are two reasons behind it. First, it is likely a network issue. Try restarting your iPhone and see if it solves the issue. Second, if you are getting a “network is busy” or “all lines in this route are currently busy” error, it is due to the lack of sufficient interconnect points being provided to Jio from other operators in India. Due to this, the majority of the calls being made from Reliance Jio’s network to other non-Jio networks are failing. In such cases, there really is nothing that you can do. It is up to Reliance and operators like Vodafone, AirTel, and Idea to solve the issue.

Remember that due to the free unlimited data and voice calls offer that Reliance Jio is offering to customers right now, its network is under unprecedented load. So, it is entirely possible that you will face some network related issues every once in a while. In such cases, you should just try restarting your iPhone to see if that fixes the issue or not. Otherwise, wait for a few days if its a backend problem from Reliance.
