You might have changed the background image or wallpaper of your iPhone to give it a personal touch, but what if you could set a video as your iPhone wallpaper. Would you be interested?

If "Yes" then checkout vWallpaper, the latest native iPhone application that lets you do exactly that.

vWallpaper is a cool native iPhone application by developer Eric Degrange which allows iPhone users to replace the boring static wallpaper with dynamic videos in the .mov format.

Based on some reports, the iPhone application is a significant drain on battery and is still a little buggy in its initial version. Some One of the known issues with the intial version of vWallpaper are that the auto-lock doesn’t seem to work with the application running in the background and some users are also complaining that the camera app is not working while vWallpaper is activated.

You can checkout the YouTube vide of vWallpaper working in the background below:

How do I set a video as a Wallpaper on my iPhone?

As always don’t forget to take a backup of your iPhone before hacking it.

You can check out these posts on how to jailbreak your iPhone which will also install the Installer App: ZiPhone 3.0 – New version of Popular tool to JailBreak and Unlock iPhone or iLiberty: Easy to use Application to JailBreak, Activate and Unlock iPhone.

You can then install the native application via Installer app but you will
still need to get your hands dirty with some command line work to copy
the video files to the application folder.

To install the application via the Installer you need to add the software repository i.danstaface.net. Here are the simple steps that you need to follow to achieve this:

  • Launch the Installer app by tapping its icon on your iPhone’s home screen.
  • Tap “Sources” button.
  • Then tap “Edit” in the upper-right corner.
  • And tap “Add” in the upper-left corner.
  • Enter the URL of the iPhone Video Recorder source: http://i.danstaface.net
  • Press “OK”
  • Installer app will add the source, and you will be able to find vWallpaper in the normal “Install” menu.

After vWallpaper is installed on your iPhone you need to put some movie files on your iPhone in the appropriate application directory.

Here are the instructions that you need to follow:

  • Install an SSH client or file transfter utility capable of transferring files via secure copy (scp), like Cyberduck for Mac OS X or WinSCP for Windows.
  • Determine your iPhone’s IP address — make sure your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, then get its IP address by tapping Settings, then “Wi-Fi,” — tap the arrow next to the name of the Wi-Fi network to which your iPhone and look at the IP Address.
  • Connect to the iPhone in your file transfer utility, using the username root and password alpine
  • If you’re using a command-line client (such as the Terminal in Mac OS X Type scp -r
  • Put properly sized movie files (320×480, for the iPhone’s screen) in the following directories: /Applications/vWallpaper.app/Library/Skrew/Videos and /Library/Skrew/Videos. A modmyifone thread links to some great sample videos. (Alternatively )
  • After the movie files have been copied, restart your iPhone, then use vWallpaper to set your wallpaper movie.

OR

  • You could alternatively also use iPhone Softwares such as Megaphone (previously known as iPhoneDrive) for Mac or TouchCopy for Windows which are available for a fee to copy the movie files to the following directories: /Applications/vWallpaper.app/Library/Skrew/Videos and /Library/Skrew/Videos.
  • After the movie files have been copied, restart your iPhone, then use vWallpaper to set your wallpaper movie.

You can download some good sample videos from this modmyifone thread.

As always, it will be great to get your feedback on vWallpaper in the comments below.
