Would you like the freedom of using any iPhone app in your car using Apple CarPlay? If yes, then we have great news for you. CarBridge, an exciting new jailbreak tweak released today allows you to use any iPhone app in CarPlay.
Apple introduced CarPlay, a feature that enables a car radio or head unit to be a display and also act as a controller for an iPhone, in 2010. However, it is quite limited, as you can only use some stock Apple apps such as Phone, Music, Apple Maps, iMessage, iBooks, and Podcasts, and very few third-party apps such as iHeartRadio, Radioplayer, Spotify, CBS Radio, Rdio, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Google Play Music, Clammr, NPR One, Audiobooks, and Audible. In iOS 12, Apple has announced that CarPlay will support third-party navigation apps like Google Maps, Waze etc. CarBridge takes things to a whole new level.
Apple has a valid reason for restricting apps in CarPlay. It does not want to support apps that could distract drivers. But some would argue that we should have the freedom to make that decision. CarBridge is targetted towards this audience.
The user interface of the jailbreak tweaks is quite simple and intuitive. After you have installed the CarBridge jailbreak tweak, all you need to do is tap on the Bridged Applications, and tap on the app you would like to enable for CarPlay, and then tap on the Enabled toggle to enable it in CarPlay mode. You can also select the preferred orientation between portrait and landscape mode.
Our good friend Cody was able to go hands-on with CarBridge, and as you can see the great thing about the jailbreak tweak is that the third-party apps like Google Maps work extremely well. You can even use the touchscreen of the head unit to use the keyboard which is not possible with CarPlay.
The jailbreak tweak also allows you to install a Portal app on your iPhone, which allows you to mirror your iPhone’s screen using AirPlay. This could be a good workaround if you run into any issues with a third-party app. It gives you the ability to run the app on your iPhone, and then AirPlay it to your head units display using the Portal app via AirPlay.
CarBridge will be released today, and it will cost $4.99. We will let you know as soon as it is released.
Jailbreak tweaks like CarBridge that allow you to get rid of such limitations and annoyances in iOS, makes jailbreaking so special.
