An early iOS 14 build hints that Apple is working on a new feature that will let users access apps without having to install it. The feature will allow users to test a certain part of the app by scanning a QR code.

9to5 Mac has analyzed the new API on iOS 14. Apparently the feature will let developers add a specific part of the app which can be accessed without having to install the app. In iOS 14, the API is referred to as “Clips API” and is integrated with QR Code reader. The users will be able to access the app by scanning code linked to the app. Once scanned the user can interact with the app via a card on the display.

As of now, if you scan a QR Code for an app that you have not installed, then it will open in the Safari browser. Things are likely to change once the new app preview feature is implemented. Instead of opening the link on the Safari browser, you will be directed to a floating app card with a native user interface.

Developers need to do their bit in order for this feature to work. Firstly, they have to mention which part of the app should be downloaded and displayed as a floating card. The app will be downloaded to iOS in the form of the Over-The-Air package. Needless to say, the floating card will come with options to download the app from the App Store. Interestingly if the app is already installed it will open the specific part on the app user interface. Apple is said to be testing the feature with DoorDash, OpenTable, Sony, and YouTube app.
