I have seen quite a few comments from iPhone Hacks readers since the release of iPhone firmware 1.1.4, on how they would love to get Customize, a native third-party iPhone application, to work on their Jailbroken iPhone.
Surprisingly and my apologies I had not even reviewed the native iPhone application which seems to be quite popular. So when iPhone Hacks reader, CerealKiller, sent me an email on the YouTube video that he had created which gives a step-by-step guide on how-to get Customize to work with iPhone firmware 1.1.4, I knew it was the perfect time to introduce you to Customize at least those of you who did not know about it and at the same time give the good news to those who wanted to get it working with latest iPhone firmware.
CerealKiller had also given us a useful tip on how to add custom ringtones for free to the iPhone.
Update (10th March):
CerealKiller has some good news for us, he has found
another solution to get Customize to work with iPhone Firmware 1.1.4. Updated video guide available after the jump.
Customize in one line, is a native third-party iPhone application to help you take Control of your iPhone. Its seems like a nifty application to give your iPhone a face-lift.
Customize allows a vast amount of customization options for the iPhone (works for iPod Touch as well). The customization options range from carrier images, Wi-Fi icons, the sliders, sounds, the keypad, ability to change the icon display order and lots more.
The good thing about the ability to change display order feature is that you can choose which icons appear where which means it allows you to put whatever applications you use mostly on the first screen.
You can check out some screenshots of the native iPhone application below which should also give you a good idea on the things that you can change with Customize:
However, like all native iPhone applications to install Customize you will need to first jailbreak your iPhone. For all those who are new to the iPhone hacking world and wondering what is JailBreaking then here is some information which will help.
When you want to customize your iPhone to add custom ringtones, change wallpaper, or install unauthorized third-party applications on your iPhone, you need to perform a task called "jailbreaking". In essence it opens up your iPhone’s file system so it can be accessed from your computer.
If you plan to jailbreak your iPhone then you can checkout the post I had published yesterday: Step-By-Step Guide to JailBreak iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 using ZiPhone and to Fix the YouTube Problem (which will also install the cool Installer App).
Once you have a Jailbroken iPhone, you can check out the cool YouTube video by iPhone Hacks reader CerealKiller below which shows you how to get Customize working with iPhone firmware 1.1.4. It seems a little tedious, but hey I am sure if you can get your favorite iPhone application to work then you won’t be complaining:
I haven’t tried this out yet so it will great to know if the video demonstration has helped you get Customize working on iPhone firmware 1.1.4 and if yes don’t forget to drop in a thank you note in the comments below to your fellow reader who has made it possible.
In case you face any issues do mention it in the comments as based on past experience CerealKiller has been quite prompt in responding to issues readers had faced with the earlier tip he had given on adding custom ringtones to the iPhone for free.
CerealKiller on behalf of fellow readers (me included ofcourse) thanks a ton for the awesome YouTube video, appreciate the effort.
If you are wondering why the native iPhone application is not
working for iPhone firmware 1.1.4 and you need to use a workaround to get it to work then this last message from the developer of Customize on 27th Feb a day after the release of 1.1.4 should provide you with the
reason:
"Development is being put on hold until the SDK is released and Customize can be programmed right."
You can get more details on Customize from the native iPhone application’s website. It will be interesting to see if Apple will make it easier for developers to develop Apps to customize the iPhone just like applications such as Customize have been able to achieve, when they reveal more details on the much awaited iPhone SDK tomorrow.
Update (10th March):
CerealKiller has some good news for us, he has found another solution to get Customize to work with iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 after the modded version of "Customize" he had mentioned in his step-by-step video guide was deleted. He has been able to findanother Repository for Customize after a lot of searching and he has been kind enough to update the video as well for us. I have updated the YouTube video above accordingly. Thanks a ton CerealKiller for figuring out a solution, you are a star!
Folks, it will be great if you can let us know if the latest instructions have helped in the comments (especially those readers who were facing the problem).
