Living in LA means two things: one, the weather is probably going to be very nice, and two, you’ll need a car to go anywhere over a mile. Having a car is essential for most people’s commute to work, school, or for errands, which is why Apple is investing a lot of time in the car industry. But, there are some things that we can do with our iPhones and iPads right now, that don’t require an Apple Car or Apple CarPlay. You want to get an alert whenever you get into your car or pull into your garage? It’s easier than it sounds, and we’ll show you how.
How to Create iPhone Reminders for When You Get In and Out of Your Car
People tend to be forgetful, which is why Reminders on the iPhone is such a popular feature. If you are like me, getting in and out of your car are perfect actions to trigger a reminder for something that you need to do. Think of how useful would a reminder to get printer paper would be the second you get into your car on the way to the office. With iOS and Reminders there are so many ways to take advantage of getting in and out of your car.
Location-based reminders are not a new thing but are definitely underutilized when you ask around. And most people know that you can set a reminder for leaving or arriving at a location, but less know that the location can actually be your vehicle/whip/car.
The only thing that may be a barrier of entry is that your car will need to have Bluetooth capabilities. If you haven’t connected your device to your car already, you’ll need to do that before Reminders can recognize when you are getting into and out of your car. Basically, the Reminders app will check if and when your phone is connected to your car, and send you a reminder either when it first connects (getting in the car) or when it disconnects (getting out).
How to Create iPhone Reminders for your car
I am going to create some test reminders for this guide. I will add two items to my list. One for getting into my car and one for getting out of it. To create a reminder, open the Reminders app and tap the plus icon to add something to the list.
Adding locations to reminders
After adding one or two items to the list, tap on a list item and you will see the “i” or information icon appear. Tap on this to move to the section where you can add some functionality to your list item. In the following screen, make sure to enable, “Remind me at a location.”
Adding car as a location
When you tap on location you’ll see options for recent Apple Maps locations, getting in and out of your car, and so on. For this reminder, select either “Getting in the car” or “Getting out the car.” You selection will highlight gray and you can double-check that your option is correct by just heading back to the Details page of the Reminders app.
That’s really all there is to it. Just remember that you need a car with Bluetooth or CarPlay in order for this location-based option to be available. You can also create a car-based reminder from you Mac computer using the Reminders app on there. The set up is exactly the same.
