Coinstar Coin Counting machines

Apparently the average US household has about $90 of spare change just sitting around.

So if you are wondering what to do with the spare change then checkout the tip by one of the readers over at TUAW to turn your spare change into iPhone Apps after the jump.

You might have seen a Coinstar machine at the grocery store. If you put the coins in this self-service machine, it gives a voucher which can either be applied to your purchases or be redeemed for cash at the store checkout. They charge a fee of 8.9 cents per dollar counted in the US (9.8 cents in Canada and 7.9 pence in UK) for the coin counting service.

But they offer their coin counting service for free, if you turn your coins into an iTunes Gift card which you can later use to buy stuff on iTunes including the iPhone apps from the App Store.

So by using this tip, you not only end up making good use of the spare change that has been lying around by buying the iPhone apps but also avoid the 9% coin counting fee.

Based on Coinstar’s website, the machines are only available in US, Canada, UK and Ireland.

Of course, you always have the option to go to the bank who will turn that change into dollars for free (especially for those in other countries) but this one seems more hassle free.

What do you think?
