Nintendo’s much-anticipated title Super Mario Run featuring our beloved plumber Mario was released on the iOS App Store earlier today in 150 countries. While the App Store did not crash under the load of millions of people downloading the game simultaneously from all over the world– at least initially, the game has been crashing for many users on their iPhone and iPad on launch.
If you have been trying to play Super Mario Run on your iPhone or iPad, but the game has been constantly crashing for you on launch, here’s how to fix the issue.
How to Fix Super Mario Run App Crashing Issue on Jailbroken iPhone
Nintendo has implemented a jailbreak detection mechanism in Super Mario Run so the game automatically crashes when it is opened on a jailbroken device. The company has taken this step to ensure that the game is not pirated easily.
So, jailbroken iPhone or iPad users have two ways to bypass this problem: either bid adieu to jailbreaking and restore their device to stock to be able to play the game. The second method requires installing a jailbreak tweak called “tsProtector 8+” from Cydia. With the tweak installed, head over to Black List Apps option in the tweak and enable the toggle for Super Mario Run. This will ensure Nintendo’s jailbreak detection is unable to verify whether your iPhone is jailbroken or not thereby preventing the game from crashing on launch. ➤ How to Bypass Jailbreak Detection in Super Mario Run
Restore iPhone as New
If you had jailbroken your iPhone previously, and are facing the crashing issue, then it is possible that there is a file or configuration that is left behind from the jailbreak that is causing the issue. Try to restore your iPhone (Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content And Settings) and set it up as a new iPhone (not from the backup). It is not ideal but it seems to have helped some readers.
How to Fix Super Mario Run App Crashing Issue on Non-Jailbroken iPhone
Force close and re-launch the game:
You can try to force close Super Mario Run from running in the background and then try re-launching it.
- Press the Home button two times quickly to access the app switcher or multitasking tray. You’ll see small previews of your recently used apps. Alternatively, if you have an iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, or iPhone 6s Plus, then you can press firmly on the left edge of the screen to switch to the multitasking view.
- Swipe until you find Super Mario Run in the list and swipe up on its preview to close it.
Free up RAM
If you own an older iPhone or iPad, it is possible that Super Mario Run is crashing due to the lack of free RAM. In such cases, you can try freeing up more RAM on your iPhone or iPad. This can be done by holding the Sleep/Wake button on your iOS device until the “silde to power off” prompt comes up on the screen. Leave the Sleep/Wake button and press the Home button until the prompt goes away and you are taken back to the home screen. Now, try to launch Super Mario Run again and see if it crashes or not.
Force Reboot the iPhone or iPad
If force closing or freeing up more RAM does not stop the game from crashing, you can force reboot your iPhone to see if it solves the problem. This can be done by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons simultaneously on your iPhone or iPad for at least 15 seconds. If you own an iPhone 7, you can hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume down button to force reboot the device. Your device should automatically reboot and you will see the Apple logo. Once your device has booted back into iOS, try running Super Mario Run again to see if it crashes or not.
Delete and reinstall the game
If the above steps still do not prevent the game from crashing on your iPhone, you can as a last ditch effort try uninstalling the game and then reinstalling it again.
If the game is still crashing for you despite reinstalling it, it is likely that the issue stems from Nintendo’s servers being overwhelmed with the load. In such a scenario, there really is not much that you can do except wait for the load on Nintendo’s servers to reduce. The company is also likely to issue an update for Super Mario Run to prevent the game from crashing since it is a widespread issue. When the update drops, do make sure to update the game and try re-launching it again.
While unlikely to solve the issue, you can also ensure that your iPhone or iPad is running the very latest version of iOS available for it.
